About The Wine

"When Markus Molitor took over his father’s Weingut in 1984, there were just three hectares of vines, today he owns 120 hectares across the most storied Mosel and Saar sites. But Molitor not only heads of one of the largest Mosel estates, he also is one of the best. Few others work with such focus and dedication – if not to say obsession." ~Decanter

When Markus Molitor took over his family estate in the 1980s, he didn’t just inherit vines—he inherited a legacy. As the eighth generation of his family to helm the winery, Markus set out with a bold mission: to restore the Mosel Riesling to its rightful golden age.

This extraordinary wine begins its journey on the iconic steep slopes of the Middle Mosel, where vines aged 60 to 80 years delve deep into slate-rich soils. These ancient roots, left untouched by modern soil clearing, draw unparalleled minerality from the earth, yielding grapes of exceptional character. The meticulous vineyard practices ensure only the most physiologically ripe berries make it to the cellar—a selection process so thorough it borders on the obsessive.

Harvested at the tail end of October, the Riesling grapes are given the luxury of time to develop optimal complexity. Gently crushed and left for several hours on the skins, the juice absorbs a wealth of aromas and minerals before undergoing a spontaneous, natural fermentation. In Markus Molitor’s historic three-story slate cellar, the wine ferments slowly at low temperatures, untouched by commercial yeasts or additives. Aging on its fine lees in large oak barrels imparts an impeccable balance, enhancing the wine’s structure and texture while preserving its vibrant purity.

The result is nothing short of a masterpiece. Aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, and delicate floral notes rise from the glass, underscored by a whisper of smoky slate—a reflection of its unique terroir. On the palate, the wine is both precise and powerful, offering a symphony of racy acidity, layered minerality, and a finish that lingers with elegance and poise.

The 2021 Alte Reben Riesling Trocken is not merely a wine; it’s a celebration of Mosel’s heritage and Markus Molitor’s unrelenting commitment to excellence. A true reflection of its vineyard and vintage, this Riesling stands among the finest expressions of what the Mosel has to offer.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This impressive dry riesling has a whole garden of fresh herbs and a wide spectrum of citrus zest aromas on the youthful and effusive nose. The juicy stone-fruit, citrusy character dominates right through the generous mid-palate into the long, structured, but silky finish. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling

The 2021 Riesling Alte Reben (White Capsule) is intense yet pure and complex on the nose, combining ripe fruit aromas and a crystalline mineral substance. On the palate, this is a pure yet intense and sustainable old-vines Riesling from different vineyards in the Middle Mosel. The finish is savoy and saline, tensioned but also balanced. 12% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023. ~91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Riesling Alte Reben White Capsule is made from vines with a minimum age of 60 - 90 years and some centenarians. This is a blend of old vine parcels across the Middle Mosel. Here, just a little shake of the glass unleashes a whole chorus of bright citrus. Lime and lemon but also aromatic tangerine dance first on the nose, then on the palate. Zestiness is the name of the game on a slender, dry body that reverberates with citrus aromas. A real bargain full of flavor and depth. (Bone-dry) ~91 Vinous Media

A gorgeously fragrant version, with fresh orange blossom and oleander flower notes, this is rich and vibrant, flecked with elements of fresh grass, celery stalk and spicy greenness. The core of fleshy aloe and nectarine is underscored by real mineral drive and a tangy acidity that carries the long finish. Chalky minerality provides a solid spine in this well-done white. Drink now through 2031. 2,000 cases made, 75 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator

A concentrated yet expressive white, which shows light signs of development, with its singed lemon peel notes. The midpalate, however, exudes peach, ripe apple, brown spice and slate aromas and flavors. Wrapped in a silky texture, with a finish that echoes with harmony. ~91 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Markus Molitor

Weingut Markus Molitor, located in Bernkastel-Wehlen on the Mosel, is renowned for producing world-class Rieslings that reflect the unique characteristics and slate terroir of the region. Markus Molitor, who took over the 3-hectare family estate at the age of 20 in 1984, has expanded the holdings to 65 hectares across 15 different sites, working to restore the Mosel's historical prominence for complex, age-worthy wines.

The winery focuses on natural, spontaneous fermentation in large oak barrels within its cool, high-humidity vaulted cellar, eschewing fining agents and cultured yeasts to ensure authentic expression across its range of dry, off-dry, and intensely sweet Rieslings, which are famously classified using a color-coded capsule system and a 3-star rating for top crus.

The estate also produces exceptional Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay, all characterized by rigorous hand-selection, low yields, and a philosophy dedicated to purity, extract density, and longevity.
