About The Wine

The Wachau is one of the great wine landscapes on earth — a narrow, sun-trapped gorge carved by the Danube between Melk and Krems, its terraced hillsides so ancient and so precisely built into the primary rock that UNESCO named the whole valley a World Heritage Site. This is Grüner Veltliner's spiritual homeland, and no vintage classification anywhere is stricter or more storied than the Wachau's own — Steinfeder, Federspiel, and at the top, Smaragd, named for the little green lizards that bask on these sun-baked stone terraces. Smaragd is reserved for the ripest, most concentrated, fullest-bodied dry wines the region can produce, and it is not a designation handed out lightly.

Enter Christoph Donabaum — one of the true rising stars of Spitz. This is a small, fiercely ambitious family estate, farmed by Christoph alongside his parents on some of the steepest, most punishing primary-rock terraces in the entire Wachau: the Zornberg, the Point, the 1000-Eimer Berg, Offenberg, and Setzberg. These are vineyards where a tractor can't go and machines can't help — every pass through the vines is done by hand, often multiple times per harvest, to pull only the very best fruit. Christoph is a proud member of Vinea Wachau, the growers' association that guards the region's classification system and its reputation for absolute purity of fruit.

The Alte Kultur bottling is Christoph's tribute to the estate's oldest vineyard heritage — sourced from Grüner Veltliner vines over 50 years old, some of the oldest plantings the estate farms. "Alte Kultur" literally means old culture, and it shows: this is a wine of real depth and structural seriousness, built in large wood foudre and stainless steel to preserve both the mineral clarity of the site and the textural richness only old vines can give.

And the critics agree — the 2022 vintage of the Alte Kultur was awarded 94 points by Falstaff's Peter Moser, cementing this bottling among the most acclaimed Grüner Veltliners coming out of the Wachau in recent years.

Pale yellow-green in the glass with bright silver reflections, the 2022 Alte Kultur opens with attractive herbal spice layered over fine cassis notes, ripe gooseberry, and a whisper of guava. On the palate it's complex and full-bodied, with fine, savory tannin grip and a long finish that closes on bright grapefruit zest. This is a Grüner Veltliner built for the cellar — serious aging potential, real structure, and a finish that goes on and on.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Light yellow green, silver reflections. Fine yellow apple fruit, a touch of honeydew melon, mineral nuances, a touch of orange zest. Juicy, complex, fine fruit expression, harmoniously structured, balanced finish. Already very gluggable, has certain ageing potential. ~94 Falstaff

THE PRODUCER

Weingut Donabaum

Weingut Christoph Donabaum is one of the true rising stars of Austria's Wachau — a small, ambitious family estate farmed hands-on by Christoph alongside his parents on some of the steepest, most demanding primary-rock terraces in and around Spitz, including the Zornberg, the Point, the 1000-Eimer Berg, Offenberg, and Setzberg. These are sites where machines can't go, so every pass through the vines is done by hand, often multiple times a harvest, to pull only the ripest, healthiest fruit. Working with vines up to and over 60 years old, Christoph crafts elegant, mineral-driven Grüner Veltliner and Riesling across the full Wachau spectrum — from Steinfeder to single-vineyard Smaragd — using low-intervention winemaking in stainless steel and large wood foudre to let the crystalline fruit and cool character of the Spitzer Graben speak for itself. A proud member of Vinea Wachau, the growers' collective that guards the region's strict quality classification, Donabaum has quickly become one of the most closely watched names coming out of this UNESCO World Heritage wine region.
