About The Wine

The Veglio family has been working the land in La Morra since the early 1900s. Angelo Veglio, born in 1928 and raised as a sharecropper, bought his first vineyard in 1960 with a dream: to bottle wine under his own name using Langhe's native grapes. In 1979, he acquired Cascina Nuova in Annunziata with five hectares including the storied crus of Arborina and Rocche dell'Annunziata. When Angelo fell ill in 1986, his 25-year-old son Mauro took over — and the family's work became a name that matters in Barolo.

Paiagallo is an important Additional Geographical Mention in the municipality of Barolo itself, distinguished by gentle, rounded contours and marly sandy soils with southeast-easterly exposure. The pedoclimatic characteristics here lay the foundation for wines of outstanding structure and aromatic intensity, along with marked elegance. Mauro Veglio's vines were planted in the mid-1980s — old enough now to deliver the depth Barolo drinkers chase.

The 2021 Barolo vintage delivered significant winter snow, a dry growing season with only 400 millimeters of rain, and a warm, sunny September. The result: low pH, high acidity, vivid colors, purity of aromas, and fresh, lively fruit. 2021 is fuller than 2019 and less structured than 2020, yet it remains elegant. The vintage is strikingly expressive — noses that lean toward openness rather than austerity, showing power and aging potential without heavy-handed extractions. It's not a patchy vintage but one of consistent excellence across Barolo's communes.

Maceration on skins in stainless steel at controlled temperature for 20 to 25 days, starting with cold maceration at 10°C for the first 48 hours. Aged in 30-hectoliter oak barrels for 24 months. Bottled without filtration or clarification. Light ruby red with faint garnet notes. The wine wraps smoothly and completely over the palate: sweet fruit, wild rose, blood orange, grilled herb, strawberry, raspberry. Tight and structured, with remarkably soft tannins and good persistence. Six bottles means six reasons to open one now and lay the rest down — it'll reward patience through the next decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas of dried flowers, roses, wild strawberries and hints of cloves. Medium- to full-bodied with compact red fruit flavors, angular acidity and very refined fruit. Really delicious and fulfilling. Already a joy to drink, but will improve with a couple of years of cellaring. ~ 96 James Suckling

A jeweled ruby red color, the 2021 Barolo Paiagallo is pure and fruit-forward, with notes of framboise, licorice candies, lavender, and sweet cedar. The palate is also pure and complex, with its deeper structure coming through the mid-palate and finish, offering ripe, building tannins, even acidity, and a bit of gamey richness. Drink 2027-2047. ~ 94 Jeb Dunnuck

The Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo Paiagallo was a little closed in my tasting and a little hard to read, initially. Nebbiolo intensity does appear with dried cherry and crushed flowers, but those aromas take a little longer to emerge. I recommend more bottle time for this 4,000-bottle release. Fruit comes from a 0.7-hectare site with 40-year-old vines, and the aging process incorporates some bigger oak casks (30-hectoliter botte) for 24 months. In terms of mouthfeel, you can't miss the wine's power and its beautifully built tannins, which are chalky and fine.~ 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

After making his own wine for 11 years, Alessandro Veglio joined forces with his uncle in 2016. Besides contributing 0.65ha in Paiagallo, he has overhauled vinification by discontinuing roto-fermentation, increasing maceration times (up to 25 days for the MGA bottlings), reducing the amount and toast level of new oak, and introducing larger casks for newer bottling such as this. With a sweetness and savouriness bridged by intrinsic juiciness, it opens with dried autumn leaves and iron before a burst of red cherry and raspberry. Luscious red fruit and blood orange are upfront on the mid-weight palate. Seems easygoing at first but the tannins have surprising force. ~94 Decanter

A beam of pure cherry infiltrates the dense structure in this solidly built red. Hibiscus, underbrush and mineral flavors augment the cherry before dissolving into the dusty, tannic finish. Best from 2029 through 2047. 300 cases made, 100 cases imported. ~ 93 Wine Spectator

Ripe pomegranate and blackberry notes gather momentum like a vintage Alfa Romeo convertable revving to life. The palate roars with the same precision engineering, its firm tannins crafted with the elegance of classic Italian bodywork while raw power purrs beneath the surface, promising miles of pleasure ahead. Drink from 2027. ~ 92 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Mauro Veglio

Mauro Veglio was born and raised in the hills that are home to Barolo. The winery has dedicated their lives and passions to Barolo wine. The Veglio family has been dedicated to working the land for generations beginning in the early 1900s in the village of Ciotto near La Morra.

Angelo Veglio, born in 1928, worked as a sharecropper and had a dream to dedicate himself to making wine and bottle wine under his name using native Langhe grapes, particularly nebbiolo. In the 1960s, Angelo bought his first vineyard in the locality of Gattera in La Morra.

In 1979, the family acquired the farmhouse called Cascina Nuova in Annunziata with about five hectares of vineyards including the cru of Arborina and Rocche dell'Annunziata. In 1986 at 25 years old, Mauro took over management of the winery after his father became ill.
