Deep in the village of Haardt, tucked into the Mittelhaardt heart of the Pfalz, sits a walled, sun-drenched clos that one legendary winemaker called the single most important vineyard site in the region. That's Im Breumel — a monopole so prized that Müller-Catoir, one of Germany's most storied estates, has claimed it exclusively for over a century, and it stands today as the only Grosses Gewächs the house produces. Protected by a sandstone wall that traps morning warmth and releases it slowly at night, and rooted in poor, decomposed sandstone gravel cropped to a punishing 35 hl/ha, this is a site built to concentrate greatness into every berry.

Müller-Catoir has been family-owned since 1774, now guided by ninth-generation proprietor Philipp David Catoir alongside winemaker Martin Franzen — a Mosel-trained talent who took the reins from the legendary Hans-Günther Schwarz, the man who turned Catoir into a household name across Germany, Austria, and Alsace. Farmed organically since the estate's 2007 conversion, this is Riesling made with obsessive restraint: hand-selective harvesting, natural fermentation, and a philosophy that prizes filigree acidity and mineral drive over anything showy.
