Founded in 1988, Patz & Hall has become one of California’s premier producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a sharp focus on single-vineyard expressions from top-tier sites across the Sonoma Coast, Carneros, and Russian River Valley.

The winery was established by four partners: Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses, and Heather Patz, each bringing their own expertise to the brand. Over time, Patz & Hall earned a reputation for elegant, expressive wines that showcase the nuance of California’s cool-climate vineyards.

Now owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Patz & Hall continues its legacy under the guidance of founding winemaker James Hall, who remains deeply involved in the winemaking process.

The winery is especially known for its close grower partnerships with some of California’s most iconic vineyards, such as Gap’s Crown, Dutton Ranch, and Hudson Vineyard. Patz & Hall wines have earned widespread critical acclaim, including multiple 90+ scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, and have been featured in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines list—a testament to their consistent quality and craftsmanship.

2021 will be remembered as a challenging year, with record low rainfall, but also as a remarkably fine vintage with many wines performing near their best in quality. The young 2021 wines are showing great promise as complex and concentrated wines, sure to give pleasurable drinking for years to come.

2021 Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a perfect example of that legacy, showcasing the region’s signature balance of vibrant red fruit, silky tannins, and coastal elegance.

Aged in 100% Burgundian French oak barrels (40% new; 60% used)

100% Pinot Noir. 

This blend displays classic coastal traits of fresh red fruits, cherry, mulled strawberry, cranberry, and cassis. Cinnamon, clove, anise, and coriander accompany subtle notes of forest floor and pink flowers. 

The palate is full and finishes with good purity, supported by refined tannins and fresh acidity. This 2021 offering is a lovely expression capturing the elegance and purity that are hallmarks of Pinot Noir at its best.

Delightful, extra juicy red and black fruits give graciously and generously with a mouth-filling texture and soft, silky tannins. The coolness of the Sonoma Coast takes the salty sea air and places it squarely on the grapes to give this wine a lovely saline finish. This deep and delicious “regular” bottling from Patz & Hall is fragrant in black cherries, pine needles and ground cloves before blackberries, black tea, and hints of cinnamon and cedar play across the palate. At once full-bodied and well-balanced, the wine offers abundant fruits and spices on a moderately tannic texture. Best through 2030. ~ 93 Wine Enthusiast
