About The Wine

Paul Hobbs, hailed by Forbes as the “Steve Jobs of the wine world,” is a name that changed the landscape of Napa Valley and beyond. A graduate with a Master’s degree in Viticulture and Winemaking from UC Davis, Hobbs first rose to prominence as Robert Mondavi’s right-hand man, playing a pivotal role as the first winemaker at the legendary Opus One winery. His journey didn’t stop there—Hobbs became vice-president of Simi Winery and eventually established a world-renowned wine empire with estates like Paul Hobbs Winery and Crossbarn in California, Viña Cobos in Argentina, Crocus in France, and Yacoubian-Hobbs in Armenia.

Today, he consults with over 30 wineries across the globe, bringing his unparalleled expertise to regions in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Canada, Spain, and beyond.

Beckstoffer To Kalon is the vineyard that launched Napa's reputation. Henry Walker Crabb planted it near Oakville in 1868 and amassed more than 400 varieties — one of the largest collections in the world by the 1880s. The Chicago Herald called him the "Wine King of the Pacific Slope." Today, To Kalon fruit commands the highest prices in the valley, and access is limited to a handful of producers. Paul Hobbs is one of them.

The 2021 vintage delivered the structure and concentration serious Napa Cabernet demands. Hand-harvested at night between October 7 and 13 to preserve freshness, this was bottled at just 469 cases.

Densely saturated garnet in the glass, with strikingly focused aromatics of crushed graphite, cedar, sage, and cigar box. Flavors of mountain black cherry, wild blackberry, and currant meet a solid tannin backbone with intensity and length. The finish is salty, savory, and precise — the kind of wine that reminds you why collectors chase To Kalon fruit.

This is allocation-only fruit from the most sought-after vineyard in Napa. Pull the cork in five years or cellar it through the next decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard ratchets up the intensity, and this beauty just about jumps out of the glass with its incredible bouquet of cr me de cassis, flowery incense, exotic spices, smoked tobacco, and loamy earth. It's full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, and opulent, yet still just dances across the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness. A lesson in true greatness in wine, this pure, seamless, flawlessly balanced 2021 will blow you away any time over the coming 20-25 years. ~99 Jeb Dunnuck

A very solid and intense wine with polished and integrated tannins that give tension and length. It’s full-bodied and reserved, suggesting greatness and excellent length. Goes on for minutes. Juicy and gorgeous. Tight at the end. Try this from 2027, but it’s already drinkable. ~98 James Suckling

Sourced from a single block and 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is impressively complex and savory on the nose, with aromas reminiscent of black cherries, mint, loamy earth, vanilla and black olives. Full-bodied and plush, this richly textural wine delivers balanced concentration and a long, velvety finish. Complex, harmonious and elegant, it's a beauty. Reading over my notes and recalling the wine, I wonder if I may have underrated it. ~97 Wine Advocate

This rich, pure and polished version offers a deep well of cassis, blackberry puree and fig paste flavors inlaid with flashes of warm earth, walnut husk, alder and dark tobacco. Broad, deep and long, this is very Oakville in feel. Best from 2026 through 2042. ~96 Wine Spectator

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is another huge, potent wine from Paul Hobbs. Masses of inky dark fruit virtually cover the incisive To Kalon tannins. This deep, explosive Cabernet is going to need a number of years to shed its baby fat, but it is certainly impressive. ~94 Vinous Media
