About The Wine

To Kalon — Napa's most storied vineyard, the fruit source Mondavi, Schrader, and MacDonald built empires on. Tor Kenward sources from a single block of this hallowed Oakville ground, farming Cabernet that defines what the valley can achieve at its ceiling.

The 2021 vintage delivered everything Napa does best: concentration without heat, structure without hardness, power that stays graceful. Cool mornings, long hang time, and a benign October gave winemakers the patience to pick at full phenolic ripeness — the kind of year that separates great sites from good ones.

Kenward's winemaking is surgical: native fermentation, French oak that frames rather than shouts, and the discipline to let To Kalon speak for itself. The result is Cabernet built for the cellar but generous enough to drink young — cassis and graphite, fine tannins, and a finish that doesn't quit.

James Suckling handed it 97 points. Vinous, 96. But the scores only confirm what the vineyard already promised: this is Oakville at its most articulate, from a site that turns every vintage into a reason to pay attention.

Cassis, blackberry, and graphite on the nose. Dense core of dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a mineral spine that runs from the mid-palate straight through the finish. Built for the cellar, drinking beautifully now with air.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2021 Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon from Tor is flat-out stunning in this vintage. It opens to incredibly captivating aromatics of ripe dark currants and blackberries that are joined by dustings of graphite, crushed gravel, violets, iron and a slight touch of mocha that all take shape as this unwinds in the glass. The palate is just as compelling, full-bodied, concentrated and structured with big tannins that are beautifully polished and well-integrated into its sweet, concentrated core. The mouthfeel is plush and layered with delicious flavors of ripe blackberries, black cherries, spices floral and graphite that continue to build as it seamlessly enters the incredibly long, yet graceful finish. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a remarkably pure expression of the To Kalon Vineyard’s pedigree and the immaculate winemaking that has gone into producing this special wine. ~99 International Wine Report

Lastly, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is based largely on clone 337, and it's a wonderfully complete, classic expression of this vineyard. Red, blue, and black fruits, smoked tobacco, loamy earth, and chocolate notes all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with full body, a layered, powerful, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a blockbuster styled profile that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. If I had a bottle, I'd drink it today, but smart money will give this 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Tor Wines

Vine Hill Ranch has a long grape-growing past starting in the 19th century. Bruce Phillips' family has owned the property since his grandfather acquired 2,500 acres in the 1950s. Early on, Vine Hill Ranch grapes went into famous Napa cabernet blend Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de la Tour Private Reserve. In 2008 the Phillips family debuted their own version, VHR. The property is now 600 acres with 70 planted to vines, located in southwestern Oakville. Vine Hill Ranch has been the source of many of Napa's greatest Cabernets for the past 50 years. The Phillips family has represented the best of the Napa Valley grape growing community for three generations. Bob and Alex Phillips moved to their family's Oakville vineyard in 1978. Tor has a 50-year history in the Napa Valley. Grapes have been grown at Vine Hill Ranch for around 150 years.
