About The Wine

Anyone who knows and loves Nebbiolo would be fortunate to have the single vineyard Vietti wines in their cellar. Compared to the top wines from France, these wines are bargains.

“Vietti makes some of the cleanest, most terroir-driven wines in Piedmont, with a rare subtlety and elegance.” ~Wine Spectator.

Vietti Winery has seminal producers in the history of Italian wine. Forbes spoke about this flagship estate saying that it “has been instrumental when it comes to enlightening the world with a deeper understanding of the various cru vineyards that exist in Piedmont, Italy.” They also called it one of the “25 best Barolo producers.”

The story started in 1800 with Carlo Vietti, but it was not until 1960 that the winery took a 180º turn when Luciana Vietti married recognized winemaker Alfredo Currado. Alfredo made important improvements in the vineyard and the cellar. Vietti was one of the first wineries to ever produce a single vineyard Barolo.

Luca Currado, Vietti’s former winemaker, brought a résumé that reads like a global wine hall of fame—Opus One, Mouton Rothschild, Simi—before returning to his roots to craft wines that Forbes has called “some of the finest Italian wine labels.” Under his leadership, Vietti earned its place among the “25 Best Barolo Producers” in the world.

Continuing this legacy, Eugenio Palumbo, with over 23 years at Vietti, has been instrumental in the winery’s success. After the Krause family took over in 2016, Eugenio expanded the estate with sought-after Barolo and Barbaresco Crus and launched the Derthona Timorasso project. Today, he builds on Vietti’s rich heritage, crafting wines that combine tradition with innovation.

Vietti Barolo Lazzarito is a winner and loved by some of the most important wine critics in the world. Vinous Media spoke highly about it in its 97pt review, saying that "

The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power."

Aging:

30 months in large oak casks and, only a small amount, in barrels. It was bottled without filtration.

100% Nebbiolo.

Deep ruby red color with garnet nuances. Fascinating and deep on the nose. Notes of hay, cut grass, tobacco, white pepper, and a hint of mint. Robust, muscular on the palate, with a taut and mineral finish. The tannins are typical of Serralunga: angular, austere, and very deep. Drink from 2024 and aerate well before serving.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A graceful and enticing wine with complex, assertive cinnamon, melon, watermelon, earth, strawberries and peonies on the nose. This is a wine that breathes, with a full body, great fruit concentration, restrained blood orange flavors, lavish, elegant tannins and long, lifted acidity. Slightly stern in the finish, as expected from a young Barolo. Best after 2028. ~97 James Suckling

This captivating red is expressive and layered, offering cherry, strawberry, plum, cut hay, green tea and iron aromas and flavors. Well-structured and balanced, with a lively feel and a superbly long finish that echoes the fruit and savory elements. Best from 2029 through 2050. 860 cases made, 200 cases imported. ~97 Wine Spectator

Fruit for this wine comes from a three-hectare parcel in Serralunga d'Alba near the village, with south and southwestern exposures in a small amphitheater. The soils in this area are older and thus more evolved, but they always create wines of strong character. The Vietti 2021 Barolo Lazzarito is easy to identify thanks to its salty mineral finish, which is almost metallic in taste, and its bright hints of sweet rosemary and wild herb. These delicate high notes form pretty framing to a dark core of elegant fruit. The estate counts five vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba, but Lazzarito is the only MGA bottling. Production is a bit larger here, with 10,363 bottles made this vintage. ~97 Wine Advocate

The 2021 Barolo Lazzarito is a potent, deep wine. Not surprisingly, it is quite closed in the very early going. Even so, all the natural power and intensity of Serralunga is very much on display. It is the most backward and forbiddingly tannic of these Barolos today. Then again, that is Serralunga. Hints of gravel, incense and charcoal peek out on the finish. ~95 Vinous Media
