About The Wine

Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is not a vineyard you find by browsing. It's one of a handful of addresses in the entire Napa Valley that serious producers spend years trying to secure. First planted in 1858 by Dr. George Belden Crane and replanted in 1998 by Andy Beckstoffer to premium Cabernet clones, the site sits at the base of the western hills in St. Helena — rocky terrain, gravelly loam soils, warm valley floor microclimate, and a mineral character that runs through every wine made from it. Lithology farms it. They made 165 cases.
Lithology has operated out of a historic stone winery on Meadowood Lane since 2014, drawing year after year from the same set of Napa's finest single vineyards — To Kalon, Las Piedras, and Dr. Crane.

Winemaker Matt Sands, working alongside consulting winemaker Philippe Melka, runs a tight, site-obsessed program. The 2022 Dr. Crane was fermented entirely in oak for 24 days, then aged 20 months in 76% new French oak — enough to frame the fruit precisely without dominating it.

The harvest timing matters here. Sands pulled the fruit on September 3rd, ahead of a significant heat wave that pushed ripeness and softened structure elsewhere in the valley. The 2022 is marginally richer than the 2021 — a touch more generous fruit concentration — but the tannins are as sculpted and patient as ever.

99% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cabernet Franc from Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard, St. Helena. The nose opens with the site's signature lifted, floral quality — blueberry, blackcurrant, and blackberry — layered with violet, red-toned fruit, and a dusty mineral character. Pipe tobacco, graphite, sandalwood, and subtle dried herbs add depth and complexity throughout. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with a supple, silky texture and sculpted, ripe tannins. Dark fruit — black cherry, dark plum — builds through the mid-palate alongside scorched earth and a whisper of chocolate. Exotic brown spice and faint cola notes reflect the vintage's warmth without any heaviness. Purity and freshness build through the long, mineral-driven finish.
Drinking window: 2027–2037.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This wine is nothing short of exceptional, captivating the senses from the first pour. It opens with an enchanting bouquet of ripe blueberries, blackberries, and blackcurrants, harmoniously complemented by luscious black cherries and delicate floral notes of violets. Rich pipe tobacco and hints of savory herbs and charcoal provide intriguing depth, while a distinct graphite character adds a mineral complexity that elevates the aromatic profile. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and refined, boasting a ripe, sweet core enveloped in a dense, concentrated texture that is incredibly pure. Its opulent and luxurious character is beautifully balanced, leading to a lengthy, memorable finish that reveals layers of dark fruit, floral notes, and lingering mineral nuances. This stunning wine showcases remarkable potential for aging, promising to evolve beautifully for years to come. ~98 International Wine Report

The Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented in a large oak tank for 20 months in 76% new French oak. It leads with the site's characteristic dusty mineral and spice notes, layered with red-toned fruits, sandalwood, and tobacco. One of the most polished wines of the vintage, it offers a wonderfully suave and silky texture, with supple tannins carrying red and black-toned fruit—the purity and density of the fruit build in length and freshness, revealing more with each sip. Exotic brown spices emerge, along with subtle cola notes reflecting the warmth of the vintage, while maple-laced dried herbs introduce a bright, lifted sweetness that never feels cloying. Perfectly balanced and exceptionally polished, this vintage offers a touch more generous fruit concentration than the 2021, yet the tannins are so beautifully sculpted that it stands confidently alongside its predecessor. The dark-fruited mineral character extends through the lengthy finish, leaving an impression of finesse and depth. ~97 Decanter

Black fruit, scorched earth, smoked tobacco, and chocolate notes all define the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard from Lithology, and it's full-bodied, has a supple, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Almost all varietal (there's a tiny splash of Cabernet Franc) aged in 76% new French oak, it's brilliant today yet should benefit from just a few years in the cellar, and I see no reason it shouldn't evolve for 10-15 years if well stored. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Dr. Crane Vineyard is terrific. It offers lovely breadth and resonance, especially for the year. Red-toned fruit, leather, spice, tobacco and incense run through. There's a bit of edginess in the tannin, but otherwise, the wine's balance is excellent. The decision to bring this fruit in on September 3, ahead of the monster heat wave, paid off. This could turn out to be quite good. ~94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

THE PRODUCER

Lithology

Nestled in the storied hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, Lithology is a modern Napa Valley winery that celebrates the ancient geological forces that shape the region’s most distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The estate sits on land that once formed part of the historic 1841 Rancho Carne Humana land grant and was first planted to vines in 1975; its original stone winery was later used by H. William Harlan as the Founders Room for Promontory and the inaugural Napa Valley Reserve vintages.

In 2014, international vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni, whose engineering background gives him a profound appreciation for soil and terroir, acquired the property and launched Lithology with a philosophy rooted in expressing place above all else. Today, the winery draws fruit from its own organic Estate Vineyard and elite sites across Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena to craft limited-production, single-vineyard wines that eloquently convey the mineral-rich soils of Napa Valley.
