About the Wine
Chateau d’Issan is a classified growth. Designated a Third Growth Classified Châteaux, wines in this category provide an excellent value. This is the type of value wine lovers and wine collectors dream of.
Château d’Issan has an extensive history in Margaux, certainly claiming one of the oldest estates in the region. The oldest recording of the wine produced here is at the wedding of King Henry II in 1152. It wasn’t until the 17th century that the estate took on its current name coming from a phonetic spelling of d’Essenault, the last name of the owner. D’Essenault was a knight and built his Château fittingly in the image of a castle. Since 1945 the estate has been owned and operated by the Cruse family. There have been extensive renovations and improvements made to the Château since this purchase.
Just to have an idea of the impressive terroir from Château D'Issan, think about this: Château d’Issan is just 1.5 miles away from Chateau Margaux, one of the world’s most lauded wineries that sells for $750-1500/btl. In 2025, D”Issan’s 2022 first wine was the James Suckling’s wine of the year. Here’s a taste of that greatness at a fraction of the price.
Blason d'Issan is the second wine from this recognized estate. This Classified Château started producing this amazing value wine in 1995. It's crafted with younger vines from the Margaux appellation. The result is an amazing wine, that shares the same particularities as its older brother, but with a friendlier approach and that's ready to enjoy earlier.
Aging: Aged in oak barrels for 12 months
Tasting Notes
55% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot. Expect a silky yet elegant expression of Margaux: round, approachable, and fruit-forward. The wine opens with delicate aromas of red berries, roses, and a hint of spice.
Critical Reviews
A velvety and fresh wine with silky tannins that flow across the palate. It's medium-bodied with an impression of crunchiness. Creamy texture. Zesty, flavorful finish. Very approachable now but better in two or three years. Second wine of d'Issan. 44% cabernet sauvignon, 55% merlot and 1% petit verdot. ~94 James Suckling
Beautiful aromatics, fresh and floral dark blackcurrant fruit, milk chocolate. Intensely concentrated, a real bite to the fruit with powdery, firm and filling tannins. A gorgeous mouthfeel, fresh but straight and tense, keeps the focus and direction. You can feel his has been well worked with balanced ripeness and acidity. Feels nicely focussed and detailed, juicy and concentrated with purity and strength. Impressive and persistent. This will be great in 5 - 10 years. 1% PV planted in 1982. 14% press wine. Percentage of production: 46%. Total acidity: 3.62. 35% new barrels. 3.60pH. ~92 Decanter
Lots of red and black fruits, sandalwood, and spicy notes emerge from the 2022 Blason D'Issan, a blend of 55% Merlot and 44% Cabernet Sauvignon. This medium to full-bodied, up-front, charming, and undeniably delicious second wine is going to drink nicely right out of the gate. ~91 Jeb Dunnuck
An attractive effort that shares some of the style and personality of the grand vin this year, the 2022 Blason d'Issan exhibits aromas of sweet blackberries, violets, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, sweet and fleshy palate built around powdery tannins. ~91 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
The 2022 Blason d'Issan is a delight. Soft, supple and inviting, this seductive Margaux will drink well right out of the gate. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, sage and mint all grace the gentle, open-knit finish. ~90 Vinous
