About The Wine

CARO was born of the alliance between two wine cultures (French and Argentine), two noble grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec), and two renowned wine families, Lafite-Rothschild and Nicolás Catena from Catena Zapata. Both vignerons since the 19th century, these two powerful organizations have combined their deep knowledge of Mendoza's high altitude terroir and the art of winemaking to create a unique portfolio of wines: CARO, Amancaya, and Aruma. Two noble grapes, two families, and an elegant portfolio of wines.

In Mendoza, the Catena family leverages their deep understanding of the region's high-altitude terroirs and their fervent passion for Malbec. Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite brings centuries-old expertise in cultivating, vinifying, and aging exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside their mastery in blending.

CARO grapes come from selected sections of rows within blocks where the soil is layered with calcareous deposits as well as limestone, remnants of a river that used to flow through Altamira. Grapes are carefully selected and hand-harvested. After destemming, they are placed in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for alcoholic fermentation, with gentle pump-overs to ease tannin extraction and fix the color.

Aging: 18 months in oak barrels from the DBR (Lafite) cooperage in Pauillac.

A dark, intense core with notes of cherry, plum, and blackberry layered with mint, thyme, and dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and fresh, with firm, glossy tannins, good acidity, and a long finish framed by peppercorn and herbs.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A blend of 83% Malbec and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Caro was sourced from Paraje Altamira and Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. Two-thirds of this wine was aged for up to a year in French oak barrels with the remaining one-third in foudres. Garnet-purple in color, it displays complex fruit aromas of plum and cherry, accompanied by thyme, rosemary and a hint of cassis. Juicy and slightly compact, the palate is dominated by fruit and finishes with cedar notes. This is a fine, balanced wine. ~96 Vinous Media

Shows good freshness, nuances and restraint despite the richness and ripeness from this year. It shows less cedary oak and creaminess than the more hedonistic 2019 and manages to keep good tension. It is also less intensely herbal and less challenging than the cooler 2021 vintage. ~94 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Bodegas Caro

Bodegas Caro was founded in 1999 as a collaboration between two legendary wine families: the Catena family of Argentina and the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) of France.

Located in Mendoza, this partnership was born from a shared vision to unite Argentina’s signature Malbec grape with Bordeaux’s classic Cabernet Sauvignon, creating wines that express both power and elegance. Combining French winemaking expertise with Argentina’s high-altitude terroirs, Bodegas Caro has become renowned for producing refined, age-worthy wines that embody the best of both worlds.
