About The Wine

Paul Hobbs founded Vina Cobos more than 25 years ago with a single ambition: to prove that Argentine Malbec could stand among the great wines of the world. This isn't mass-market fruit — it's Malbec as a voice of place, depth, and restraint, from one of the producers who put Argentina on the ultra-premium map.

Bramare means "to yearn" in Italian — the name pulled from Frances Mayes' Under the Tuscan Sun, capturing the determination that drove Hobbs when he first arrived in Mendoza in 1988. This line represents 25 years of terroir study, a relentless focus on showing that Malbec can speak with nuance, not just power.

Lujan de Cuyo is the soul of Argentine Malbec — high-altitude vineyards at the base of the Andes, intense sunlight, dramatic diurnal shifts, and alluvial soils that give the grape its signature structure and depth. This is the region that built the country's reputation, and Cobos has been mining it for a quarter-century.

Aged 18 months in French oak, 20% new, and left unfiltered. The result: deep ruby with violet edges, aromas of blackberry, cherry, plum, graphite, and a floral lift. The palate is round and juicy, fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity, mineral undertones, and a long, structured finish. 92 Vinous. 95 James Suckling, who called it "round and juicy, with fine-grained tannins and a long, well-structured finish."

This is what $44 Malbec looks like when the producer has been working the same ground for 25 years. Drink it tonight or cellar it through the next decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"The 2023 Malbec Bramare Luján de Cuyo comes from several growers across the district. It opens with violet and blackberry, hints of jammy fruit and gentle oak in the background. Classic in style, it remains compact, with tannins between plush and reactive—an imprint of the vintage—supported by appealing juiciness." ~92 Vinous Media
