About The Wine

Borgo Maragliano has been family-owned in Loazzolo, in the Langa Astigiana, since 1850 — five generations of Giovanni Galliano's line farming the steep, chalky hillsides of Alta Langa. In the 1970s, the estate became one of the first in Piemonte to specialize in classic-method sparkling wine. Today, Carlo Galliano — oenology degree from Alba in hand — runs winemaking across 41 hectares, with his wife Silvia and two of their three sons.

This is the 8 Mesi bottling — eight months on the lees in stainless steel, then finished via Charmat method. It's a different approach than the estate's Alta Langa DOCG wines, built for immediacy and bright, punchy fruit rather than layered complexity. The goal: high-tension Chardonnay at a price that makes zero sense.

Alta Langa Chardonnay is high-tension stuff. The altitude and the limestone deliver minerality and acidity that Champagne growers would recognize instantly. Pale straw with green highlights and fine persistent mousse. The nose opens with bright lemon and sweet grapefruit, followed by yeasty tones and dried tropical fruit. Dry, mineral, and taut on the palate — acidity and chalk in balance, with aromatic herbs and a long, clean finish that adds tartness at the end.

100% Chardonnay from an east-facing slope at 410 meters in Loazzolo, Alta Langa DOCG. Fermented in steel, bottled the April after harvest, then aged about 32 months on the lees. That time strips away the green, herbal edge and gives the wine a delicate texture. Released roughly three years after harvest. Very fine chains of bubbles, pale straw with green glints. Fruit, lime, aromatic herbs, honey, and acacia on the nose; seductive, long, and harmonious on the palate. Serve at 6–8°C (43–46°F) on its own, as an aperitif, or with shellfish, raw fish, and fresh cheeses.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Fruity and vibrant, with white peach and nectarine aromas leading to a medium-bodied palate with good volume and supporting acidity. It’s framed by firm, vertical bubbles that add structure. Drink now or hold. ~92 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Borgo Maragliano

Nestled high in the hills of Loazzolo in Italy’s Langhe region, Borgo Maragliano is a family-owned estate led by the Galliano family, dedicated to crafting expressive sparkling and aromatic wines that honor both tradition and place.

Perched at 450 meters above sea level, the estate’s 25 hectares of vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils and the gentle Marin breeze, which enhances grape aromatics and preserves freshness. With deep respect for the land, Borgo Maragliano blends centuries-old methods with modern winemaking precision, producing elegant wines—most notably its celebrated Moscato d’Asti—that capture the pure, vibrant spirit of Loazzolo.
