About The Wine

Cakebread Cellars has been a Napa Valley stalwart for half a century, the kind of name that signals reliability without needing a thesis defense. The 2022 Suscol Springs Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a vintage marked by a dry, mild winter and an even, temperate spring and summer — optimal conditions that fostered concentrated, deeply colored fruit. The result was a small, exceptional yield, and this wine carries all that intensity forward.

Winemaker Niki Williams — who cut her teeth at The Prisoner and Mount Veeder — brings a blend of modern energy and old-school Napa muscle to the estate.

Rocky hillsides, cool bay breezes, and vines that have to fight for every drop: that's the recipe behind Cakebread's Suscol Springs Cabernet Sauvignon. Grown on the family's estate in the cooler southern reaches of Napa Valley, where San Pablo Bay keeps things fresh, these vines dig deep through rocky outcroppings high above the valley floor. The struggle pays off in small, intensely concentrated berries that deliver a Cab with serious muscle and real lift. Think waves of blackberry, boysenberry, and black cherry, a hint of violet and gravel, bright acidity keeping it all lively, and firm, polished tannins that carry through to a long, mineral-laced finish. It's a single-vineyard Napa Cab with depth and backbone that's still totally drinkable now.

This is the kind of Cabernet that makes supermarket wine taste emotionally vacant. Drinks well now, but it'll still be hitting its stride years from now.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Brooding aromas of blackcurrants, mulberries, mocha, graphite and baking spices. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving flavors of blackberry compote, blood plums and black olives. Quite serious, with underlying freshness. Drink or hold.~93 James Suckling

Built entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon, this enticing wine delivers the pleasure of ripe fruits with the freshness of flowering herbs, dusty earth, and mouthwatering length. Black fig, mixed berries, cocoa powder, espresso, and melting tannins complete the experience of this structured, textured, and polished wine.~93 Wine

THE PRODUCER

Cakebread Cellars

Cakebread Cellars is a family-owned winery in Rutherford, Napa Valley, founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread. Today, the family farms more than 584 acres of vineyards across Napa Valley and Anderson Valley, cultivating a patchwork of soils, microclimates, and grape varieties. The winery is best known for its Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which are distributed internationally, and it produces around 200,000 cases a year. It started with a single parcel of Sauvignon Blanc and quickly became a benchmark for approachable yet serious California wine, anchored by a Chardonnay that balances richness and freshness. Cakebread is also Napa Green certified, with more than four decades of focus on quality, consistency, and continuity—both in the vineyards and in the team behind them.
