Few names carry the weight of Catena Zapata in the world of fine wine. Founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, the estate spans six historic vineyards across Mendoza and remains family-owned, now guided by Nicolás Catena Zapata and his daughter Laura Catena, who reintroduced Malbec to fine winemaking and pioneered high-altitude viticulture in Argentina. The fruit for this bottle comes from one of the most legendary sites in South America. Nicolás Catena Zapata planted the Adrianna Vineyard in the Gualtallary district of the Uco Valley with a single, obsessive goal: finding the coolest possible location for growing vines in Mendoza. Within Adrianna Vineyard, Fortuna Terrae is a special, tightly-defined parcel — roughly 5 hectares sitting at 1,366 meters above sea level, planted on alluvial soils with deep loam studded with white stones and a limestone overlay. The name literally translates to "luck of the land," and it earns it: the deep loamy soils are threaded with native grasses that prevent erosion and draw in beneficial insects, songbirds, and mountain foxes, and the combination of deep soil and extreme altitude gives these wines their signature freshness — optimal acidity paired with delicate floral aromatics. The 2022 vintage is crafted with real patience: a 3-to-7-day cold soak below 10°C using 60–80% whole clusters, a 10-to-19-day fermentation, extended maceration, and 14 to 18 months of aging split between 500-liter French oak barrels and large 2,200-liter foudres.
