About The Wine

Some Napa Cabernets are made to impress. The Chappellet Pritchard Hill is made to endure. Donn and Molly Chappellet founded their estate in 1967 on the rocky eastern slopes of Pritchard Hill, following the guidance of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff — becoming one of the first wineries in California to plant exclusively on high-elevation hillsides.

That founding conviction, that the best Cabernet comes from mountain terrain, remains the soul of everything Chappellet does.

Pritchard Hill is not a formal AVA, but insiders have long argued it deserves to be. Perched above the Napa Valley floor, the site delivers naturally thin soils, serious drainage, and the kind of stress that forces vines to dig deep and produce small, intensely concentrated berries. Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus, who has guided the program since 1990, ferments and ages dozens of individual micro-blocks separately before assembling the final blend — a process that captures every nuance of elevation, aspect, and soil.

The 2022 Pritchard Hill is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak. It is Chappellet's most sought-after wine, produced in strictly limited quantities, and consistently celebrated as a benchmark for what Napa mountain Cabernet can achieve.

94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot

The wine opens with deep garnet-purple color and an expressive nose of cassis, blackberries, vanilla, and a thread of graphite and crushed stone minerality. Violet florals and dark chocolate add complexity as the wine opens in the glass.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and generous — supple and round, with ripe tannins that have already integrated beautifully. Notes of mocha, dark spice, cedar, and dried herbs layer through the mid-palate, all framed by a lively freshness that keeps the wine from feeling heavy.

The finish is long, fragrant, and mineral-edged. Drink now with a long decant, or cellar with confidence through 2040 and beyond.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A terrific effort from a challenging vintage, Chappellet's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill—94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot—boasts expressive scents of cassis, blackberries, vanilla and caramel. It's full-bodied, supple, generous, deep and round, expansive on the palate and framed by soft, fully ripe tannins and hints of mocha on the lingering, velvety finish. Showy, impressive and delicious, it should drink well for a couple of decades. ~ 98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

~98 Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux

Blackcurrant, cola and minty fresh aromas on nose. Fleshy and super ripe, sticky liquorice and exotic spices. There’s an immediate burst of power and fleshiness with concentration - this is a bold and massy wine. It maintains elegance despite muscular and sinewy tannins with tons of personality overall. Stylish but certainly big and showy. Great fruit forwardness and overall freshness with dried herbs, scrubland notes and dark ripe fruit. I'd leave this a few years before approaching but when it's ready it'll be a beauty. 3.71pH. ~ 97 Decanter

~ 97 The Wine Palate

As always, Pritchard Hill produces a bold, beautiful expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is hard to believe that the site isn’t its own AVA, considering all of the unique wines that have come out of the site over many years. This wine continues to make the case for AVA status, with brooding blackberry, cassis, soft vanilla, layered spice tones, and a long finish. It is quite supple for a young Pritchard Hill, making it a good candidate to drink while you are aging the 2021 for the long haul. That’s not to say, of course, that you can’t hold this for a while. Great stuff, as usual. Contains 6% Petit Verdot. ~ 96 Wine Review Online

The nose is wonderfully complex and deeply scented, with aromas of blackberries, cassis, earth and cedar. The palate is full-bodied with seamless tannins and acidity, giving notes of mocha, graphite, dried herbs and spices. Incredibly balanced and powerful, with underlying freshness. Excellent. Drinkable now, but best from 2028. ~ 96 James Suckling
