About the Wine

Château Coutet is a true gem, and if you’re looking to dive deeper into the world of Bordeaux’s sweet wines, this is where you’ll want to start. Located in Barsac, a smaller but incredibly important sub-appellation encircled by the renowned Sauternes AOC, this estate delivers wines that are both high-quality and historically significant. While Sauternes wines are known for their rich, powerful sweetness, Barsac wines like Château Coutet offer a slightly lighter, racier profile that brings a fresh, energetic lift to their deep complexity.

Barsac’s unique terroir—comprised of sandy, clay, and limestone soils—sets it apart from the broader Sauternes region. The cooler climate here helps the grapes retain a perfect balance of acidity, which is key to crafting wines with that beautiful tension between sweetness and freshness. And Château Coutet has been harnessing this distinct advantage for centuries. The estate’s vineyards are planted predominantly to Sémillon, with a little Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, allowing them to create wines with incredible depth and a unique, refined elegance.

When you sip on Château Coutet, you’re not just enjoying a glass of wine—you’re savoring a piece of history, made from some of the finest vineyards in Bordeaux. This is a wine for the true connoisseur, one that captures the essence of Barsac—elegant, sophisticated, and undeniably special. Perfect for everything from a celebratory toast to a quiet evening of indulgence, Château Coutet takes you straight to the heart of Bordeaux’s sweet wine legacy.

Aging: 18 months in barrels

Tasting Notes

Luxurious blend of 96% Sémillon, 3% Sauvignon Blanc, and 1% Muscadelle. The wine offers intense aromas of honey, brioche, tropical fruits like pineapple and tangerine, with nuances of marmalade, butterscotch, and orange confit. On the palate, it reveals rich flavors of honey-coated pineapples, roasted apples, apricots, and spices, balanced by a refreshing acidity. The texture is unctuous, yet the wine remains light and elegant. Finishing with hints of citrus, mint, and a long, spicy aftertaste, it showcases exceptional depth, balance, and complexity. Drink now or age until 2050.

Reviews

The 2022 Château Coutet is more deep gold-hued and has a ripe, powerful style in its brioche, toasted bread, honeyed orange, and marmalade-like aromas and flavors. It's a rich, unctuous, full-bodied effort that has serious density and depth. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Coutet delivers nuances of pineapple, tangerine oil, orange confit and spice. Exotic and unctuous, it's also light on its feet for such an obviously rich wine. There's great balance here. ~95 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Honeysuckle, butterscotch, mangos, flowers, and honey-coated tropical fruit aromas fill the nose. On the palate, there is a richness that's loaded with honey-drenched pineapples, roasted sweet green apples, spice, and apricots that are already delicious! The wine blends 96% Semillon, 3% Sauvignon Blanc, and 1% Muscadelle. Drink from 2026-2050. ~95 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2022 Coutet opens with notes of apricots, spices and exotic fruits, setting the stage for a medium to full-bodied, round and supple palate enhanced by brightness and tension that culminates in a spicy, minty finish. Its balanced structure and lively acidity contribute to an ethereal ending, making it a very elegant yet chiseled Barsac. This blend of 94% Sémillon, 5% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle is matured for 18 months in barrels. ~94+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Lots of dried-apricot and peach aromas with hints of dried white mushrooms and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, this has lots of sweetness but a spicy flint and citrus character with dried pineapple and white peaches. Extremely long and flavorful. Such a balance and classiness to this. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Orange, lemon, lime, honey, caramel with an almost candy floss scent. Smooth and so satisfying on the palate, a lovely buttery element alongside signature bitterness. Complex and compelling, really thick and glossy but enjoyable. ~94 Decanter
