About the Wine
Château Pichon Baron, located in Pauillac, is a neighbor to some of the most emblematic Châteaux in the world like Lafite Rothschild, and Château Latour.
This Château dates back to the 17th century when Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan, a famous wine merchant of the time, bought the plots to create Enclos Rauza. Soon after, it became his daughter's dowry in her marriage to Jacques Pichon de Longueville, and that was when Pichon Baron was born. In 1851, construction of the iconic castle began. Later in 1855, the Château's wine was classified as Second Grand Cru Classé.
In 1933, this emblematic estate became the property of the Bouteiller family. Today, Château Baron belongs to AXA Millésime's insurance group. These new owners rebuilt and equipped the Château with state-of-the-art technology.
Like almost all of Pauillac, the terroir from Château Baron is a dream site overlooking the Gironde river. The soils of this 180-acre estate, are composed of quaternary gravel deposits, large pebbles and sand, and an excellent maritime climate.
With Christian Seely as the director since 2001 and Jean Rene Matignon as the winemaker, the winery continues to grow both in terms of wine and tourism, becoming one of the most prestigious Châteaux in the Médoc area. If you're a wine lover and love to travel, this is a must-visit place.
2022 was an extraordinary vintage for Bordeaux, it was blessed with a 95 pt review by Wine Spectator who said: "A new paradigm for Bordeaux. Very aromatic and sleek, fresh and pure in feel, with all major varietals performing well; far more consistent than the 2018-2020 trio."
Tasting Notes
81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot.
Critical Reviews
With a solid depth of color, the wine jumps from the glass with its show display of licorice, black fruits, lead pencil, currants, lavender, cocoa, and spice in the aromatics. The show-stopping palate is rich, intense, long, concentrated, spicy, and most importantly, concentrated and pure. While your palate bathes in the wine, the sensation is all about its freshness, purity and length. The first vintage produced with the efforts of the estates new Technical Director, Pierre Montegut is a resounding success. This is clearly one of the best vintages in the history of Pichon Baron! The wine blends 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. 14.3% ABV, 3.63 pH. The harvest took place September 8 - October 3. Yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare. 48% of the harvest went into the Grand Vin. Drink from 2028-2065. ~100 The Wine Cellar Insider
Ruby. Blackberries, anise, dark fruits, liquorice, fruit forward nose, layered and detailed. Scented and lifted. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, detailed, nuanced, layered, refined, elegant, nuanced, gorgeous energy, truly long. ~100 Christer Byklum
81% Cabernet Sauvignon + 19% Merlot. Very intense nose of blackcurrants and tobacco; minty, tight, dense, and luscious on the palate with a strong backbone. Vibrant with a great mid-palate. It is a tremendous wine, rich in flavor and complexity, with excellent length and a remarkably long aftertaste. ~99 Great Wines from Bordeaux
What a nose with complex aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, graphite and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, this has layers of tannins and intense richness but is framed and held together by the phenolic structure. Vertical and deep, it goes on for minutes on the palate. Great finish. 81% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot. Give this five to six years to come together more. Best after 2030 and beyond. ~98 James Suckling
This is already shaping up to being one of the stars of the vintage. With its great fruit, fully enveloped by the structure and tannins, the wine has been set well for the future. The aromatic black fruits are intense and concentrated. ~98 Wine Enthusiast
The 2022 Pichon Baron is one of the most elegant, polished wines I have ever tasted here. Silky and refined, the 2022 is super-impressive right out of the gate. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. Blood orange, herbs and floral notes lend notable delineation to a core of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. As I did en primeur, I find the wine's balance nothing short of exquisite. There's more freshness and vibrancy here than in the past, along with a noticeably lower oak imprint and more sensual tannins that lend notable sophistication throughout. ~98 Vinous Media
The 2022 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is young and unevolved, with a barrel sample-like feel, offering cassis, graphite, liquid violets, and incredible purity. Powerful and structured, it has remarkable depth, rock-solid concentration, and seamless integrated structure and tannins. Based on 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot aged 18 months in 70% new oak, this classically styled, inward Pauillac is one of the most promising wines of the vintage and should evolve for 40+ years. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck
Aromas of sweet dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and licorice introduce the 2022 Pichon-Longueville Baron, a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine that's deep, dense and lively, with terrific concentration, sweet tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Integrated and serious, this hints at the lavishness inherent to the vintage, while remaining classic and controlled. This blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot was bottled in June. ~98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Deep dark ruby in colour with an inky, opaque core, purple reflections, and subtle brightening on the rim. On the nose, a multi-faceted bouquet of ripe dark wild berries, a touch of fine oak, floral nuances, and subtle hints of strawberry. The palate is powerful and full of finesse, with ripe dark forest berry and cherry fruit, pronounced, integrated tannins and mineral notes with nougat on the lingering, slightly saline finish, worth laying down for many years to come. ~98 Falstaff
This towering red offers a remarkable combination of freshness and weight. The well-endowed core of cassis, plum and black cherry puree shows polish and brightness, and a sleek iron note keeps this grounded. That background is laced with rose petal, iris and apple wood, while a subtle savory twinge percolates throughout in a way that only a classic Bordeaux can accomplish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2050. 12,797 cases made. Best from 2026 through 2050. 12,797 cases made. ~97 Wine Spectator
