About The Wine

Founded in 1998 by Terry and Mary Peabody, Craggy Range has built a legacy producing exceptional wines from New Zealand's most distinguished sites. The family established a 1,000-year trust to ensure the winery remains under family stewardship for generations — three generations work together today.

Kidnappers Vineyard sits in Hawke's Bay, one of New Zealand's most respected Chardonnay regions — a place that delivers wines with the richness of New World fruit and the structure you'd expect from Burgundy. This is cool-climate Chardonnay with genuine depth, sourced from coastal vineyards that catch the maritime influence and diurnal swings that keep the fruit taut and minerally.

The 2022 vintage delivered bright, focused fruit with natural acidity. The wine shows apple, lemon curd, and nutty minerality on the nose, with a reductive struck-match note and sea spray. On the palate it's spicy, tangy, and mouth-wateringly long — elegant Chardonnay with the kind of tension that makes it interesting to drink.

Bright apple, lemon curd, nutty and minerally flavors. Reductive struck match with sea spray and lemon rind on the nose. Spicy, elegant, tangy, and mouth-wateringly long on the palate. Did see some oak treatment.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

From a coastal vineyard in Hawke's Bay, there's prettiness, even delicacy, to the lemongrass, salt and floral notes, with a toastier, richer underbelly to pad things out. Mid-weight, it's precise and focused with lovely tension and textural interest. Drink now—2032. ~94 Wine Enthusiast

Aged for eight months in French oak, this comes from coastal vineyards in Te Awanga, not far from the famous Kindnappers Cliff. A lemony, lightly oak-influenced style, there's a sheen of creamy oatmeal on the nose then that direct, fat lemony thrust of fruit. Mid-palate, there's a burgeoning sense of something more exotic about the fruit. Pink grapefruit asserts in the finish, for a stylish, fresh and delicious wine. ~ 93 Tom Cannavan

Mineral and white pepper with oyster shell aromas to the cooked apple and pear character. It’s medium-bodied with lovely phenolics and focus. Drink now. ~92 James Suckling
