About The Wine

Founded in 1998 by Terry and Mary Peabody, Craggy Range has built a legacy producing exceptional wines from New Zealand's most distinguished sites. The family established a 1,000-year trust to ensure the winery remains under family stewardship for generations — three generations work together today.

Sophia is the estate's flagship Merlot-dominant Bordeaux blend, sourced from the legendary Gimblett Gravels vineyard in Hawke's Bay. The Gravels are New Zealand's answer to Pomerol — deep, heat-retaining stony soils that deliver Merlot with uncommon concentration and structure. This is old-vine fruit from one of the country's most revered terroirs, crafted by Chief Winemaker Ben Tombs, named New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year in 2020.

The 2022 vintage delivered refined, elegant fruit. The wine is full-bodied, firm, and built for the cellar — the kind of Merlot-led blend that makes you rethink what New Zealand can do with Bordeaux varieties.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

There's a cool minty, dried herbal edge to this Merlot, Cab Sauv blend, but there's also plenty of blackcurrant and forrest berry fruit, underpinned by mocha and warm stones. Medium to full bodied, it lacks some of the stuffing of previous vintages. It's not exactly a mouth-fulling wine of plush, ripe fruit, but instead one of contemplation, that shows just a few of its cards, preferring to keep most to its chest for now. Drink 2026-2032. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast
