About The Wine

Domaine Carneros isn't another California sparkling house — it's what happens when Champagne Taittinger stakes 138 acres in Carneros and builds its American dream. Founded in 1987 by Claude Taittinger, the estate was created to prove California could produce finesse-driven, terroir-expressive wine worthy of the Taittinger name. The still Pinot Noir program channels that same rigor into Carneros fruit.

Carneros is fog-belt Pinot country — cool maritime air pushes in from the San Pablo Bay, slowing ripening and preserving the kind of tension and lift that makes the grape sing.

The 2022 Estate Pinot is drawn from those estate blocks, ten months in French oak giving it structure and a quiet layer of toasted spice.

The wine opens with vibrant aromas of strawberries, blueberry bush, citrus peel, and cassia bark. On the palate it's medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity — plush and generous, but with underlying tension. Very refined and pure, with a soft touch. James Suckling scored it 94 points and called it ready now or built to hold.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Vibrant aromas of strawberries, blueberry bush, citrus peel and cassia bark. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, showing a plush and generous mouthfeel with underlying tension. Very refined and pure, with a soft touch. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

The outstanding ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir offers red currant and red raspberry notes alongside garrigue accents on the palate. Soft, round and showing good freshness considering the heat spikes at harvest, this is a beautiful bottling that is best consumed now and over the next few years. ~ 92 Owen Bargreen

Ripe, dark red fruits swirled through with baking spices and freshly cracked pine, reveal a mouthwatering, flavorful, and juicy still, Pinot Noir. Silken tannins and an ultra long finish. ~90 Wine Enthusiast

THE PRODUCER

Domaine Carneros

The CEO is Remi Cohen. The winemakers are Zak Miller and TJ Evans. Domaine Carneros is Taittinger's winery in California. The winery was opened by the Champagne house as a result of the potential for quality sparkling wine in California. California sparkling wines are made with mostly the same grapes and production techniques as Champagne. Premium California sparkling wines strive for finesse and elegance rather than imitating Champagne. Domaine Carneros was established in 1987 when Claude Taittinger selected a 138-acre parcel. Domaine Carneros was founded in 1987 by Claude Taittinger, a member of the noble family behind Champagne Taittinger. Eileen Crane was selected as Founding Winemaker to oversee the development of the Taittinger style in Carneros.
