    About The Wine

Domaine Leflaive's roots go back to 1717, when Claude Leflaive settled in Puligny-Montrachet. The estate took its present shape between 1910 and 1930 under Joseph Leflaive, and has spent the decades since building one of the most respected names in white Burgundy. It was also one of the earliest adopters of biodynamic farming in the region, certifying with Ecocert in 1992 and Biodyvin in 1998.

Les Pucelles sits just north of the two Bâtard-Montrachet grand crus, sharing their altitude and soil, and it's widely regarded as the strongest premier cru in Puligny — close enough to grand cru intensity to rival its neighbors in the right years. The 2022 bottling comes from three parcels totaling just over three hectares, with vines planted between 1954 and 1985 on southeast-facing, calcareous clay slopes at 230 meters.

The 2022 growing season ran hot — three separate heat waves through July and August — but cooler nights kept the fruit balanced, and mild rain in mid-August let the vines finish ripening on their own schedule. Harvest began August 25. In the cellar, the wine goes through long, gentle pressing, a full day of decanting, and fermentation in oak (25% new), followed by twelve months in cask and six more in tank before bottling.

100% Chardonnay. Pear, clear honey, white flowers and orange oil on the nose, with a touch of youthful reduction giving it some grip. On the palate it's medium-to-full-bodied, satiny and seamless, layering ripe citrus and a hint of marmalade and ginger against a backbone of lively, vibrant acidity. Some notes point to sea spray and stony minerality emerging with air. Long, precise finish.

    CRITIC REVIEWS

    What the Critics Said

"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru lags behind the other three from this climat, reserved and surprisingly austere in the context of the growing season. Perhaps it is in an awkward phase? Returning after 10 minutes, scents of sea cave and sea spray emerge. The palate does not seem to possess the same degree of concentration, balanced with a tang of marmalade and ginger, yet without the precision that a Les Pucelles can deliver. Has it got something up its sleeve? Probably, so tuck this away for three or four years. Bottled under Diam. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." ~95 Vinous Media

"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles reasserts its traditional role as Leflaive's dominant premier cru this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, clear honey, white flowers and orange oil, framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's pure and enveloping, with a sweet core of fruit, lively acids and a long, precise finish." ~95 Wine advocate

"Ethereal aromas and flavors of white flowers, lemon and apple grace this charming, fluid white, which picks up a stony mineral element as it plays out effortlessly on the long aftertaste, showing terrific harmony. Drink now through 2030. 985 cases made, 197 cases imported." ~93 Wine Spectator

    THE PRODUCER

    Domaine Leflaive

The estate as we know it today took shape between 1910 and 1930, when Joseph Leflaive expanded the domaine through strategic acquisitions of vineyards and homes—laying the foundation for one of Burgundy’s greatest names.

Since its creation, Domaine Leflaive has remained entirely family-owned. Today, leadership rests with Brice de La Morandière, Joseph Leflaive’s great-grandson and the fourth generation at the helm.

After a successful international business career, he stepped in following the passing of Anne-Claude, a trailblazer in biodynamic viticulture.
