About The Wine

Bodega Garzon sits on 200 hectares in coastal Maldonado, Uruguay — the product of over a decade of research and $85 million in investment by Argentine billionaire Alejandro Bulgheroni.

The estate won New World Winery of The Year in 2018 from Wine Enthusiast. This is a winery built without compromise.

Bodega Garzón is the estate that dragged Uruguayan wine onto the world stage. Alejandro Bulgheroni planted it on granite hillsides eleven miles off the Atlantic, near Punta del Este, and cut no corners: a LEED-certified winery and flying winemaker Alberto Antonini brought in to get the fruit right.

The coastal breezes and ballast-and-granite soils do something to Tannat you rarely see inland — they polish it.

This bottling is the proof. The fruit comes off the coolest, steepest single-vineyard blocks, ferments in concrete, then rests 12 to 18 months in French oak. What you get is 100% Tannat with the grape's signature grip, but rounded and layered instead of rustic — black plum, blackberry, tobacco, dark chocolate, a lift of pepper and spice.

Full-bodied and structured, it's a red-meat wine: pull the cork an hour before roasted lamb, duck, or a steak off the grill. Drinks well tonight, holds for years.

100% Tannat.

Deep purple in the glass, with a nose of black plum, cherry, and blackberry over tobacco, dark chocolate, and baking spice.

Full-bodied and juicy on the palate — dark fruit up front, a graphite-and-pepper edge, and Tannat's signature tannins, here firm but polished.

Fresh acidity keeps it lively through a long, oak-framed finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

~95 Tim Atkin, Master of Wine

This tannat comes from the oldest part of the winery's 2008 plantation on the granitic hills of Garzón. With 18 months in oak barrels, this represents the spirit of the local tannat, with a much gentler, much more delicate extraction that determines the character of the house's wines. The ripe and succulent black fruits dominate here. The texture is soft and almost creamy, and the wine has deep flavors. One to cellar or serve with stews. ~ 94 Descorchados

Plenty of pencil shavings, dark fruit and blackberries follow through to a medium body, with a tight and focused palate and a long and flavorful finish. Reserved and polished. Very drinkable now but even better in a year or two. ~ 93 James Suckling

Leads with savory undertones and hints of dried strawberry and cardamom before adding a juicy plum core, while subtle floral and herb notes chime in. Offers rich dark chocolate details, with nice persistence and firm but integrated tannins. Drink now through 3036. 4,000 cases made, 1,100 cases imported. ~ 92 Wine Spectator

Ground black pepper and plums open the nose of this well-balanced Tannat from coastal vineyards. The dense palate exhibits a fruit-forward character, with blackberries and hints of cardamom. It has sturdy tannins, vibrant acidity and a juicy finish. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
