About The Wine

Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon under $150 is practically unheard of. The producers who source from this vineyard charge $250 to $450+ for the privilege. This bottle is $149 at BHW. That doesn't happen often — and when it does, you move on it.

There's a short list of vineyards in Napa Valley that every serious Cabernet buyer knows by name. Beckstoffer Georges III — GIII, as the trade calls it — is on that list. Located on the Rutherford Bench, this 300-acre block was first planted in 1895. Georges de Latour purchased it in 1928 and called it Beaulieu Vineyard No. 3 — the site where Andre Tchelistcheff spent decades crafting the BV Private Reserve Cabernets that put Napa on the global map. Andy Beckstoffer bought the property in 1988, and since then GIII has become one of the most coveted fruit allocations on the valley floor. The hallmarks are consistent across every producer who works with it: concentrated dark-fruit, firm structure, and the cocoa-powder earthiness the trade calls "Rutherford Dust."

The market reflects exactly how seriously buyers treat this address. Schrader Cellars charges $250–$450+ for their GIII bottling. Realm Cellars' single-vineyard version runs $300–$400. Fairchild Estate: $300–$450. Carter Cellars and Tor Kenward: $200–$300. Alpha Omega sits at around $250. Even Myriad Cellars — one of the more accessible GIII expressions — starts at $175. Getting a Beckstoffer Georges III allocation is a badge of honor in this industry. Producers price accordingly.

The Justice label is the Bulgheroni estate's entry point into the Beckstoffer program, crafted by Matt Sands with Philippe Melka and Michel Rolland consulting on the final blends — the same team producing Lithology, which commands $300 per bottle for its Beckstoffer single-vineyard wines. In 2022, a long, even growing season without significant heat events delivered full GIII concentration while keeping the Rutherford Bench's characteristic mineral tension intact. Winemaker Matt Sands called 2022 a vintage that "rewarded patience and precision."

A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard on the Rutherford Bench, Napa Valley. Deep garnet in the glass, the nose opens with concentrated dark fruit — cassis, blackberry, and dark cherry — alongside graphite, cedar shavings, and the distinctive earthy mineral quality characteristic of the Rutherford Bench. Full-bodied on the palate with a rich, concentrated core of black fruit framed by firm, polished tannins. Notes of dark chocolate, dried herbs, and tobacco add complexity through the midpalate. The finish is long, mineral-driven, and persistent. Significant cellar potential; will reward 10–15+ years of aging.

THE PRODUCER

Lithology

Nestled in the storied hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, Lithology is a modern Napa Valley winery that celebrates the ancient geological forces that shape the region’s most distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The estate sits on land that once formed part of the historic 1841 Rancho Carne Humana land grant and was first planted to vines in 1975; its original stone winery was later used by H. William Harlan as the Founders Room for Promontory and the inaugural Napa Valley Reserve vintages.

In 2014, international vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni, whose engineering background gives him a profound appreciation for soil and terroir, acquired the property and launched Lithology with a philosophy rooted in expressing place above all else. Today, the winery draws fruit from its own organic Estate Vineyard and elite sites across Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena to craft limited-production, single-vineyard wines that eloquently convey the mineral-rich soils of Napa Valley.
