About The Wine

Keplinger Wines was founded in 2006 by winemaker Helen Keplinger and her husband DJ Warner, a project rooted in an obsession with Rhône varietals and the hillside vineyards capable of expressing them at their most profound.

Helen holds an MS in Enology from UC Davis and built her craft at some of California's most elite addresses — Paradigm Winery, Bryant Family Vineyards, and Kenzo Estate — but it was three years immersed in Spain's Priorat region, working alongside consultant Claude Gros at Cellers Melis, that crystallized her winemaking philosophy: terroir is everything, and the winemaker's role is to listen. Named Vinous Winemaker of the Year 2023 by Antonio Galloni, previously celebrated by Food & Wine Magazine in 2012, and featured on the cover of Wine Spectator in 2014, Helen is one of California's most decorated and sought-after winemaking talents. Keplinger remains a small-lot, single-vineyard operation — meticulous, minimal-intervention, and relentlessly focused on site.

The Fuego y Mar — Spanish for "Fire and Sea" — is Keplinger's signature Sonoma Coast Syrah and one of California's most compelling cool-climate expressions of the grape. It is sourced entirely from the Silver Eagle Vineyard in Occidental, owned and farmed with exceptional care by the Ulises Valdez family. The name captures the vineyard's defining duality: two contrasting soil types — ancient ocean-floor sediment and Sobrante volcanic rock — that together shape a Syrah of uncommon complexity and tension. Côte Rôtie and Hermitage Syrah clones are planted on these steep, wind-scoured volcanic hills, producing low yields of small, intensely concentrated berries. Cool maritime influence from the nearby Pacific tempera ripeness and preserves the wine's aromatic lift and precision. The resulting Syrah is floral, layered, and deeply structured — a wine critics have compared to the great expressions of Cornas and Côte Rôtie, while being thoroughly, unmistakably Sonoma Coast in character.

Eye: Deep, near-opaque ruby-purple with a vivid, inky core.

Nose: Boysenberry, black raspberry, and oil-cured black olive lead, giving way to violets, cracked black pepper, lavender, bittersweet chocolate, and a whisper of smoked bacon fat. Crushed volcanic rock adds a mineral underpinning.

Palate: Full-bodied and plush, with ultra-fine, polished tannins and a silky, seamless texture. Layers of dark fruit, spice, and floral notes build progressively, anchored by bright acidity and a long, perfumed finish. Youthful and structured, with serious aging potential.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A bold yet refined syrah with deeply scented aromas of black cherries, graphite, black olives and dark bitter chocolate. The palate is silky smooth with ultra-refined tannins and lively acidity that leads to a bright yet reduced and savory black-fruited finish. Delicious. Drink or hold. ~ 95 James Suckling

The 2022 Syrah Fuego y Mar is laced with blue/purplish fruit, lavender, chocolate and clove. All the signatures of this site come through but in the lighter style of the year. Although the 2022 doesn't have the mid-palate depth of the best vintages, it is still a very pretty, vivid and expressive red wine. This is beautifully done. ~ 94 Vinous Media

A well-spiced, darkly fruited and dense style, yet silky on the palate, offering notes of violet and fresh berries. A thread of licorice and minerality runs through and keeps everything fresh. Ends with suave tannins and plenty of fresh thyme. Drink now through 2038. 150 cases made. ~ 93 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Keplinger

Founded by winemaker Helen Keplinger and her husband DJ Warner, Keplinger is a boutique California producer laser-focused on single-vineyard Rhône varietals — Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre — crafted with minimal intervention to let each vineyard's terroir do the talking.

The project was born from Helen's years immersed in the wine culture of Spain's Priorat and southern France, where she and DJ fell deeply in love with the Mediterranean way of life and the food-friendly wines of the Languedoc and Rhône — inspiration she brought home to California. Named Food & Wine's Winemaker of the Year in 2012 and featured on the cover of Wine Spectator in 2014, Helen's work has been called one of the most exciting and innovative winery projects to emerge in California in years, with small-lot production and a cult following to match.
