About The Wine

“If you meet Robin, the wines make sense. They have power, finesse, charm and class.” – Philippe Melka, Winemaker

Step into the world of Lail Vineyards, where wine-making heritage dates back to 1879 with the founding of Inglenook Vineyards by Captain Gustav Niebaum. Fast forward to today, and you’ll find Robin Daniel Lail honouring this illustrious legacy with the 2021 J. Daniel Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon, a testament to over 140 years of wine-making excellence.

Robin Daniel Lail grew up at the fabled Inglenook Vineyards, surrounded by the legacy of her great-granduncle, Captain Niebaum, and her father, John Daniel, Jr. This rich history is woven into the very fabric of Lail Vineyards, where tradition meets innovation in every glass.

“I was raised by my dad. John Daniel, Jr., in the grand family tradition of Inglenook. He was, like Gustave Niebaum before him, a leader, an innovator, and the producer of legendary wines. Our flagship wine at Lail Vineyards, the J. Daniel Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon, is named in his honor. My greatest challenge at Lail Vineyards is to create wines that meet and exceed the level of excellence set by my family in earlier generations."- Robin Daniel Lail

J. Daniel draws fruit from four exceptional sites across the valley: Heimark Vineyard in Calistoga, Vine Hill Ranch in Oakville, the Steltzner Vineyard in Stags Leap District, and Lail's own Mole Hill Vineyard on Howell Mountain. It is aged 20 months in 80% new French oak, and only 1,119 cases were produced in 2022.

Think of it as Napa's answer to a First Growth Bordeaux — the same grandeur, the same precision, the same collector demand — but unmistakably Californian in its richness and generosity.

This is a wine for special occasions, for cellaring, and for the moments that deserve something extraordinary.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep ruby-plum in color with an opaque core. The bouquet delivers an impressive array of cassis, black cherry, blue fruit, scorched earth, baking spices, and subtle chocolate oak.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and forward, with a voluptuous, velvety mouthfeel and layers of blackberry jam, boysenberry, dark mulberry, and mocha.

Firm, grainy tannins frame a long, plush finish with hints of smoked cedar and earthy depth. Bright acidity for the vintage adds unexpected freshness and drive.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

As has been the case for the last several vintages, Lail's 2022 J. Daniel Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon draws largely on vineyard sources in Calistoga, Oakville and Stags Leap. Marked by intense black cherries and cassis, this full-bodied beauty is concentrated and velvety, finishing plush and long, while showing no chocolaty over-ripeness or dried fruit at all. Even if it appears to lack the polished structure and potential longevity of the 2021, it remains a luscious calling card for soul-satisfying Napa Valley Cabernet. ~ 98 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

~ 97 The Wine Palate

The flagship 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon J. Daniel Cuvée is based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from throughout the valley. Its deep ruby/plum hue is followed by a brilliant Cabernet revealing loads of cassis, blue fruits, scorched earth, baking spices, and subtle chocolate oak that define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with a forward, voluptuous mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. It plays in the ripe, forward, sexy style of the vintage and will drink brilliantly over the coming 15 years or more. ~ 96 Jeb Dunnuck

Made from four of the best parcels sourced throughout the valley, this shows its quality and pedigree with aromas of red and black fruit, ferric earth, crushed stones and dried rose petals. The palate is silky and refined, with tannins in complete harmony and a long and persistent finish. Exceptionally well made, with a high level of finesse. Drink or hold. ~ 95 James Suckling

In 2022, the J. Daniel Cuvée is remarkably approachable right at the pull of the cork. Briary blackberry and cedarwood lift from the glass, leading to a full-bodied palate where robust tannins build with intensity, only to melt away gracefully. As the wine unfolds, layers of sage, dried thyme, and black currant emerge, framed by graphite minerality and dried violets that carry through the expressive, lingering finish—a powerful yet refined Napa Cabernet with immediacy and depth. ~ 94 Decanter
