About The Wine

Stephan Asseo trained at the École Oenologique de Mâcon in Burgundy before establishing Domaine de Courteillac in Bordeaux in 1982. Over the next fifteen years, he built a reputation as one of Bordeaux's most technically gifted — and most restless — winemakers, later acquiring Château Fleur Cardinale in Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and Château Robin in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. But AOC law kept getting in the way. Asseo wanted to blend freely — Bordeaux varieties with Rhône varieties — and the rules of the appellation wouldn't allow it. So in 1996, he sold everything and took his family on a year-long global search for somewhere they could.

They looked at Argentina, South Africa, Lebanon, and Napa before landing in Paso Robles in 1997 and falling in love with a 127-acre parcel in the Willow Creek District.

L'Aventure was born in 1998. The estate is planted at 2,100 vines per acre across multiple hills of calcareous shale — ancient marine deposits — with 57 acres under vine and dramatic diurnal temperature swings driven by proximity to the Templeton Gap.

Today L'Aventure is regarded alongside Saxum and Booker as one of Paso Robles' foundational prestige estates, and Stephan's daughter Chloé has joined the family business, bringing a next generation to what her father built.

The Estate Reserve — formerly known as Estate Cuvée and produced since 2001 — is L'Aventure's flagship. With the 2022 vintage, Stephan Asseo renamed and repackaged the wine to mark a new chapter: same philosophy, higher ambition.

The 2022 is a blend of 55% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Petit Verdot, drawn entirely from estate fruit harvested at very low yields of 1.5 to 2 tons per acre.

Fermentation is followed by 21 months of aging in 83% new French oak and 17% one-year-old French oak, with malolactic fermentation completed in barrel. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

Eye: Deep, dark purple with exceptional density and opacity.

Nose: Cassis and black raspberry open with ground pepper, violets, and graphite, followed by mulberry, black olive, dried herbs, and game meat. A thread of chalky minerality runs beneath — ancient limestone rising through the fruit.

Palate: Full-bodied and richly concentrated, with beautiful mid-palate depth and ripe, well-integrated tannins. Blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, and earth give structure; energetic acidity keeps the wine focused and long. The finish is commanding and persistent — this is a wine built to last.

Drinking Window: 2028–2045+. Approachable with extended decanting now; cellaring will be rewarded.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A complex and inviting nose of mulberries, black olives, dried herbs and game meat. The palate is full-bodied with chalky tannins and energetic acidity, showing notes of blackcurrants, cedar, tobacco leaves and earth. The flagship wine of the estate that was once called Estate Cuvee, but from 2022 onward is named the Estate Reserve. Made from a blend of 55% syrah, 33% cabernet sauvignon and 12% petit verdot. Incredibly complex and masterfully constructed. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.~97 James Suckling

Lastly, the flagship 2022 Estate Cuvee is a blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and it's one of the more concentrated, powerful wines in the vintage. Darker berries, spice box, tobacco, and graphite all give way to a full-bodied 2022 with a layered, ripe mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. As with most 2022s, it's going to have plenty of up-front appeal. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

Classy from the first tilt of the glass, the 2022 Estate Reserve wafts up with an enticingly rich bouquet of crushed blackberries and raspberries complicated by dried roses, violets and a hint of ashen stone. Textures of crushed velvet are matched by an elegant mix of red berry fruits and autumnal spices. Super-fine tannins frame the finish as the 2022 tapers off with minty freshness and a subtle tinge of balsamic spice. The balance here is remarkable, especially for the vintage. ~ 95 Vinous Media

Driven by opaque fruits and toasty, cappuccino-like aromas framed by dried herbs. The palate is opulent and polished, leading to an immensely chewy, grainy finish. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Combining 55% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Petit Verdot, this leads with deep, dark blackberry and blackcurrant fruit aromas. On the palate, concentrated black fruits dominate, supported by robust tannins and a full-bodied character. The wine concludes with a long, lingering finish embodying a defiantly 'more is more' philosophy. A rich, elegant and sophisticated wine to drink now or lay down. ~ 93 Decanter

THE PRODUCER

L'Aventure

Stephan Asseo made wine in Bordeaux for 17 years before the rules of the appellation system drove him to look elsewhere. After a worldwide search, he and his wife Beatrice landed in the westside hills of Paso Robles in 1998, founding L'Aventure on 127 acres in what is now the Willow Creek District — limestone soils, big diurnal swings, and the freedom to blend Bordeaux and Rhône varieties his own way.

The estate is farmed at very low yields (about 2.5 tons per acre), and the wines — Estate Cuvée, Optimus, and a string of small-lot blends — have made L'Aventure one of the most acclaimed producers in Paso Robles, with top scores from Jeb Dunnuck, James Suckling, and the Wine Advocate vintage after vintage.
