About The Wine

The Nigl family has farmed vines for centuries in Kremstal, but 1990 marked the turn to serious, estate-focused winemaking. In 1995 they took over parts of the historic Starhemberg estate — including a reading court from the 12th century — and in 1999 added the Goldberg and Zwetl vineyards at Rehberg. Today Martin Nigl farms sustainably, refusing herbicides, insecticides, and even copper (which he considers harmful to both vine vitality and soil health), planting cover crops of legumes and herbs instead. The work is quiet, exacting, and built for the long run.

Piri is one of four terraced parcels Nigl farms on the southwest-facing slope above Senftenberg castle ruins, erected in 1197. The vineyard sits on south-facing mica-schist soils, and the cooler nights — courtesy of the forested mountains surrounding Senftenberg — create larger diurnal swings than you'd find in the neighboring Wachau. The result: a longer hang time, more developed aromatics, and the kind of layered minerality and spice that Kremstal does better than almost anywhere.

The 2021 vintage was a gift to Austria — cleaner, more complete fruit than most of Western Europe saw that year — and 2022 continued the momentum. This bottle earned 93 points from James Suckling, who noted "a breathtaking combination of enormous concentration and raciness." Light golden-green in the glass. The nose opens on tropical fruit and citrus laced with garden herbs — lemon zest, white pepper, celery, lime blossom. The palate is full-bodied but taut, with juicy gooseberries, tart peach, green apple, and a long mineral finish that keeps pulling you back.

Nigl's philosophy: it's harder to make a 12% wine with real elegance and depth than to chase ripeness up the alcohol ladder. This is proof of concept — Kremstal Riesling that drinks with precision, energy, and the kind of textural complexity you expect from wines twice the price. Pull the cork tonight or give it three years in the cellar; either way, it's ready to prove why Austrian Riesling belongs in the conversation.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Very bright nose of freshly grated lemon zest and garden herbs, even a touch of mint. Sleek and focused with juicy ripe gooseberries and tart peach fruit on the medium-bodied palate, then the wet stone minerality and racy acidity charges through at the long, expressive finish. Vegan. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap ~93 James Suckling

Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Delicate tangerine zest, white peach fruit, floral nuances, mineral touch. Medium body, fine yellow tropical fruit, fine acidity, elegant, well lasting, versatile. ~92 Falstaff

THE PRODUCER

Nigl Piri

Martin practices sustainable farming, never using herbicides or insecticides. Martin plants cover crops of legumes and herbs. Martin avoids copper, considering it detrimental to vines' vitality and harmful to soil. Nigl has vineyards on terraces of Senftenberg's southwest facing slope: Höchacker, Pellingen, Piri, and Kirchenberg. Nigl has vineyards in the village of Krems planted to Grüner Veltliner, including vines 75 years in age on loess soils. Viniculture has a long tradition in the Nigl family for centuries, linked to agriculture until 1990. Since 1990, the family has dedicated itself entirely to winemaking. In 1995, large parts of the Starhemberg winery were taken over, including a reading court from the 12th century. In 1999 the winery expanded with the Goldberg and Zwetl vineyards at Rehberg.
