About The Wine

Nikolaihof is the oldest wine estate in Austria — its foundations trace to a Roman tower from 63 B.C., with documented winemaking back to 470 A.D. The Saahs family has owned the estate since 1894, and in 1971 they became one of the earliest biodynamic practitioners in the world, earning Demeter certification in 1998. Today, Nikolaus Saahs and cellarmaster Katharina Salzgeber continue that legacy with wines that honor both history and terroir.

The 'Zwickl' is an unfiltered Hefeabzug — a style named after cloudy, unfiltered beer. Made since 2014, it's bottled with the sediment intact: pour from the top for a clear glass, or shake the bottle for a cloudy, yeast-forward pour. It's Gruner Veltliner at its most elemental — no filtration, just Danube Valley fruit from Mautern and Stein vinified in stainless steel.

The 2022 is five years old now and has seen plenty of sunshine. At 12.5% alcohol, it's built for the table. Grapefruit, chopped herbs, olives, a lightly salty mineral spine. Crisp apple fruit, white pepper, a flintiness and smoke that runs underneath. The leesy character adds a touch of creaminess at the finish without weighing the wine down. Winemaker Nikki Saahs recommended pairing it with steak — this is a white wine that doesn't back down from meat.

$32.99 for a 91-point, biodynamic Gruner from one of Austria's most important estates. The kind of wine that drinks like it costs twice that, and makes you wonder why you're still buying mass-market whites from the grocery store.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

It has a slightly reduced nose with some subtle notes of butter and hints of sage. The palate is dry and even with good concentrated fruit depth and good supporting acidity. ~93 VinePair

Some will consider this unfiltered, light-bodied gruner veltliner a natural, but whichever way you see it this has stacks of crisp apple fruit and white pepper character. I love the interplay of lemony freshness with a touch of leesy creaminess at the joyfully bright finish. Just 11.5% alcohol. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~91 James Suckling

The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Zwickl Unfiltriert is named after the Zwickl concept of cloudy, unfiltered beer. Winemaker Nikolaus Saahs Jr. emphasizes that the term refers only to not filtering the wine and is a style that has been made since 2014. Vinified in stainless steel, the grapes are grown in Mautern and Stein, i.e. on both banks of the Danube. Intense leesy freshness and yeastiness rise from the glass. The palate is mild, smooth and rounded, with a white pepper notion and an almost perfumed, floral quality to the yeastiness on the mid-palate. There is lovely freshness on the finish. (Bone-dry) ~90 Vinous

THE PRODUCER

Nikolaihof Zwickl

Weingut Nikolaihof is listed among the best producers of Austria. Nikolaihof is one of the oldest wine estates in Austria, with a history going back almost 2000 years to the Roman Empire. The foundations of the current house date to a Roman tower which existed as early as 63 B.C. The first written evidence of winemaking comes from 470 A.D., documenting monk ownership of the vineyard 'Im Weingebirge', the earliest named vineyard site in all of Europe. The Saahs family acquired Nikolaihof in 1894. Nikolaihof has been practicing biodynamics since 1971, making them one of the longest biodynamic practicing wineries in the world. Nikolaihof became Demeter certified biodynamic in 1998. Nikolaus (Niki) Saahs took over in 2005 and has been joined by his partner, Katharina Salzgeber, who is now the estate's cellarmaster.
