It has a slightly reduced nose with some subtle notes of butter and hints of sage. The palate is dry and even with good concentrated fruit depth and good supporting acidity. ~93 VinePair
Some will consider this unfiltered, light-bodied gruner veltliner a natural, but whichever way you see it this has stacks of crisp apple fruit and white pepper character. I love the interplay of lemony freshness with a touch of leesy creaminess at the joyfully bright finish. Just 11.5% alcohol. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap. ~91 James Suckling
The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Zwickl Unfiltriert is named after the Zwickl concept of cloudy, unfiltered beer. Winemaker Nikolaus Saahs Jr. emphasizes that the term refers only to not filtering the wine and is a style that has been made since 2014. Vinified in stainless steel, the grapes are grown in Mautern and Stein, i.e. on both banks of the Danube. Intense leesy freshness and yeastiness rise from the glass. The palate is mild, smooth and rounded, with a white pepper notion and an almost perfumed, floral quality to the yeastiness on the mid-palate. There is lovely freshness on the finish. (Bone-dry) ~90 Vinous

What the Critics Said
THE PRODUCER
Nikolaihof Zwickl
Weingut Nikolaihof is listed among the best producers of Austria. Nikolaihof is one of the oldest wine estates in Austria, with a history going back almost 2000 years to the Roman Empire. The foundations of the current house date to a Roman tower which existed as early as 63 B.C. The first written evidence of winemaking comes from 470 A.D., documenting monk ownership of the vineyard 'Im Weingebirge', the earliest named vineyard site in all of Europe. The Saahs family acquired Nikolaihof in 1894. Nikolaihof has been practicing biodynamics since 1971, making them one of the longest biodynamic practicing wineries in the world. Nikolaihof became Demeter certified biodynamic in 1998. Nikolaus (Niki) Saahs took over in 2005 and has been joined by his partner, Katharina Salzgeber, who is now the estate's cellarmaster.
