About The Wine

Some of California's most serious Cabernet doesn't come from Napa at all. It comes from Knights Valley — the warmest, most hidden corner of Sonoma, over the ridge from Calistoga. Same mountain, different county, a fraction of the fame. And since its 1989 debut, Les Pavots has been the bottle that put the whole valley on the map.

That's the part that gets me. It drinks with Napa's structure and Sonoma's acidity, but flies under Napa's radar. The valley is tiny, barely touched by tourism.

Real mountain wine, grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Saint Helena up to nearly 1,400 feet, on an estate a British family pledged to hold for 100 years. The 2022 is a classic Bordeaux blend — 63% Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Dark and built in the glass: blackcurrant, graphite, firm tannins with real drive, and the estate's signature thread of herbes de Provence. Only 2,397 cases made, and it's built to run 15 to 20 years.

That's the case for three bottles: open one now for the power, lay two down while it grows into itself. Wines this good, from a valley this quiet, don't stay secret forever.

Pure, layered aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant, violet, iodine, chocolate, and thyme. Full-bodied and mineral-driven with powerful, fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity. Hints of black tea and baking spices lead to a long, smooth finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots soars from the glass with a whole range of savory, floral top notes. Medium in body yet very deep, the 2023 is a superb example of both the year and Knights Valley. Vibrant red-toned fruit, blood orange, graphite, cinnamon, chalk, mint and dried herbs are some of the many notes that come alive in the glass. All of the energy of this cold, late-ripening year comes through loud and clear. Several recent bottles from the late 1990s and early 2000s point to the longevity of the best vintages, as I expect will be the case with the 2023.  ~97 Vinous Media

The 2023 Les Pavots is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, from grapes harvested very late, from October 27 to November 11. It has singular aromas of red and black currants, blueberry, salty licorice, violet, roast lamb, cigar ash and thyme, and its oak spice is seamlessly integrated. The full-bodied palate is powerfully styled with iron-laced flavors and abundant, velvety tannins. It’s balanced by bright acidity and has a very long, elegant finish. It will be long lived in the cellar. 2,940 cases were made and will be released in April 2026.  ~96 Wine Advocate

THE PRODUCER

Peter Michael

Peter Michael was born on 17 June 1938 and is a British engineer and businessman. He was educated at Whitgift School. After training as an engineer at Queen Mary University of London, he worked at Smith Industries and Plessey. He founded and managed technology companies including Micro Consultants Group, UEI plc, Cosworth Engineering and Quantel. In 1983, he founded the Peter Michael Winery in the Knights Valley region of Calistoga, northern California. Les Pavots was named by Lady Michael after the wild California poppies that color the landscape of the Knights Valley ranch. Since the debut 1989 vintage, this refined Cabernet blend offers a signature profile of blueberry notes, a hint of herbs de Provence, and a wonderful expression of the full spectrum of red Bordeaux varieties.
