About The Wine

Pine Ridge Vineyards, founded in 1978 in Napa's Stags Leap District, built its name on estate Cabernet from five premier appellations. Black Diamond is something different—a collaboration with sister winery Seven Hills in Washington's Red Mountain AVA, where steep volcanic slopes and relentless sun produce Cabernet with uncommon intensity.

Red Mountain is one of the most rugged terroirs for Cabernet anywhere. The warmest, driest corner of Washington, it delivers fruit with power and precision—the kind of depth Napa Cab drinkers pay double for. Winemaker Bobby Richards hand-selected fruit from premiere sites on those sun-drenched slopes, harvested in late October when morning temps hit 50°F to lock in vibrant acidity.

After cold soak and fermentation in stainless steel, the wine spent 20 months in 50% new French oak, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result balances ripe fruit with structure—fine-grained tannins, breadth without bulk, athletic rather than heavy. Lush black raspberry and cherry on the nose, juniper and chanterelles, a creamy chocolate entry flowing into a juicy midpalate and cocoa powder finish.

Black Diamond is named for Pine Ridge founder Gary Andrus, an Olympic downhill skier who brought the same adventurous spirit to winemaking. Decant for an hour, serve at 62-65°F, and taste what Red Mountain does when it's done right.

THE PRODUCER

Pine Ridge Vineyards

Pine Ridge Vineyards sits in the heart of Stags Leap District, founded in 1978 by Gary Andrus and built on 160 estate acres across five of Napa's most distinguished appellations.

The winery holds Napa Green certification and has always embraced sustainable practices. In 2023, winemaker Josh Widaman—who previously crafted Wine Spectator's #1 Wine of the Year at Lewis Cellars—took the reins and immediately began upgrading the cave and winery infrastructure.
