About The Wine

Paul Hobbs came to Mendoza in 1988 to look, not to buy. He'd already made his name in Napa — UC Davis-trained, he cut his teeth under Robert Mondavi, became the first winemaker at Opus One, and served as VP at Simi — but Mendoza's terroir held him. He spent years consulting for Nicolás Catena before putting his own name on anything, and that early groundwork is a big part of why Argentine Malbec now gets taken seriously on the world stage. The first Cobos Malbec was 1999. It remains the wine everything else at this address is measured against.

Hobbs now splits his attention across wineries on three continents — Paul Hobbs Winery and Crossbarn in California, Viña Cobos in Argentina, Crocus in France, Yacoubian-Hobbs in Armenia — plus consulting work across more than 30 estates worldwide. Cobos, farmed sustainably in both vineyard and cellar, is where the Mendoza project lives.

The 2022 is drawn from two estates on opposite sides of the argument. Chañares, in Los Árboles at 1,184 meters in the Uco Valley, supplies 57% — stony alluvial ground, gravel and rounded stone over calcareous sediment, roots that run deep and wide. Hobbs Estate in Agrelo, at 995 meters in Luján de Cuyo, supplies the other 43% off clay-topped soil. Cool altitude against warm clay. That tension is the wine.

Picked by hand between March 17 and April 2. Sorted by bunch, then by berry. Fermented in stainless steel, full malolactic, then eighteen months in French oak with 61% new barrels. Bottled without fining in October 2023.

Malbec — 57% Chañares Estate in the Uco Valley, 43% Hobbs Estate in Luján de Cuyo. Deep violet with dark nuances. Ripe plum and dark fruit on the nose, with a delicate floral touch. Elegant, pure and complex on the palate, with a balanced mid-palate, sweet tannins and a long, graceful finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2022 Malbec Cobos Hobbs Estate is the bottling that started it all, the prompt for global winemaker Paul Hobbs to see if Argentine Malbec could be considered a noble grape by the world and also prompted him to keep going into the mountains to find the cooler sites. Showing plenty of nuance here, it's the fulfillment of a goal to study Valle de Uco as a right bank/left bank exploration of Malbec. Spending 18 months in barrel, it shows plenty of full-bodied power and dense concentration without ever losing sense of place or the acidity that speaks to elevation. Age 20-30 years. ~98 Jeb Dunnuck

Dark and brooding with black olives, blackberries and tar. Full-bodied and elegant, featuring a lush, deep core of dark fruit that coats the palate. Rich, powerful and packed with flavor but with a sense of balance. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

The 2022 Malbec Hobbs Estate comes from Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo and was aged for 18 months in French barrels, 56% new. It opens on a dark-fruited register with blackberry, a leafy nuance, hints of blackberry jam and finely judged oak. Very fine, velvety tannins on the palate find seamless support from delicate wood, giving the wine a sense of polish and depth. Rich yet refined, it should gain further nuance with bottle age while remaining anchored in its black-fruited core. As the vineyard continues to stabilize, future vintages may edge toward the red-fruit expression more typical of Luján de Cuyo.  ~94 VM
