About The Wine

Alto Adige sits at the crossroads of Alpine precision and Italian soul — a place where Pinot Noir finds the cool nights and limestone soils it demands, delivering wines that speak more like Burgundy than Bordeaux. Weingut Ebner works these vineyards with the quiet rigor the region is known for, coaxing elegance and depth from fruit that wants to reveal itself slowly.

The 2022 vintage captures everything this corner of Italy does well: bright, focused fruit with the structure to reward patience. Othmar scored this 91 in October 2023, noting the precision and layered complexity that separates mountain Pinot from warmer-climate versions.

The wine shows radiant ruby color and a nose built on blackberry, raspberry, and spice — clean varietal expression without the over-extraction that flattens so many reds. On the palate, it moves with the kind of effortless lightness that only comes from perfect ripeness and restraint: deep fruit carried by delicate tannins, a thread of elegant bitterness, and fine spice that lingers long after the glass is empty.

This is the kind of Pinot Nero that rewards the cellar — beautiful now, better in three years, and built to hold through the next decade. Pull the cork tonight or tuck it away; either way, you're drinking at a level most retail Pinot can't touch.

THE PRODUCER

Weingut Ebner

Weingut Ebner is a small, family-run winery in Atzwang, in South Tyrol’s Eisack Valley, where the Alpine landscape meets a distinctly Mediterranean influence.

The Ebnerhof was acquired by Florian Unterthiner’s grandfather, Josef, in the 1930s, and the family has since developed a deep connection to the steep, sun-drenched vineyards surrounding the estate. In 2013, Florian and his wife Brigitte began producing wines under their own label, bringing the estate’s approximately 4.5 hectares of vineyards into their own cellar.

Today, the winery focuses on expressing the unique character of this high-altitude terroir through elegant, structured wines that combine freshness, minerality, and the distinctive personality of South Tyrol.
