About The Wine

You've probably had Australian Shiraz before — maybe a big, jammy bottle that hit you over the head. That's fine, but it's not the whole story. The 2023 Alkina 'Kin' is the other side of Australian Shiraz, and it's a side most American wine drinkers have never seen.

Behind this wine is the uncompromising vision of Alejandro Bulgheroni, the billionaire vintner whose global pursuit of terroir led him to create Napa icons like Lithology. Bulgheroni’s philosophy is simple: acquire the world’s most exceptional land and entrust it to the world’s greatest winemakers. By bringing the same "no-expense-spared" precision used to craft his $300+ Napa Cabernets to the exciting Barossa Valley soils

Alkina is a small organic and biodynamic estate in South Australia. Instead of making the biggest, loudest wine possible, they focus on purity — whole-bunch fermentation, concrete aging, no new oak. The result is a medium-bodied, aromatic red with dark florals, purple fruit, and a savory mineral finish. Think of it as Australia's answer to a great French Syrah. At just 13.5% alcohol, it's the kind of bottle where one glass turns into the whole thing disappearing.

Five critics scored it between 90 and 93 points, and almost nobody in the U.S. knows this producer yet. At this price, you're discovering something special before the rest of the market catches on.

92% Shiraz, 8% Mataro. Dark rose, liquorice, and black tea on the nose, with violet perfume and purple fruit underneath. The palate is medium-weight and juicy, showing ripe plum and blackberry layered with spice, blossom, and earthy tones. A schist-driven mineral core gives structure, with fine, powdery tannins and a crystalline finish. Fermented with 85% whole bunches across multiple parcels, aged entirely in concrete and large-format oak. No new oak.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"Three different parcels of young- and old-vine shiraz fruit in the blend, 85% whole bunches, fermented in concrete tulips (P14 went into foudre) and matured for six months before blending. A wonderful, cohesive wine, plush with ripe plum and blackberry fruits yet savoury, layered with spice, blossom and earthen tones, tannins like powdered sand and a crystalline mineral cadence tempering the fruit. Seems very comfortable in its own skin, and it IS delicious." ~93 Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

"The 2023 Kin Shiraz comes almost entirely from Block 23 in the estate vineyard. The block is very rocky with great variation, and it sits atop a ridge. The parcels range from 70% - 100% whole clusters. 'We are pretty committed to whole bunch,' says Amelia Nolan. This was matured entirely in concrete vessels (six new tulips in time for the 2023 vintage!). The wine is energetic and fresh, powdery textured, gently grippy and fine. It's a lovely wine, pure, driven by clarity. I like it!" ~92 Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"Barossan shiraz playing a cool-Luke hand, exuding notes of dried kelp, blueberry, green olive and mace. The suite of 23s is lighter and bit more astringent than the preceding two vintages, the tannins lilting toward a greener edge across the finish. This said, the drinkability quotient is high. Drink or hold." ~91 James Suckling
