About The Wine

Cakebread Cellars has been a Napa icon since the 1970s, the kind of producer that anchors a serious cellar without requiring a decoder ring. Their Reserve Chardonnay is where the estate shows what cool-climate Carneros fruit can do when you let it speak—barrel fermentation, extended lees aging, and the kind of patient winemaking that turns orchard fruit into something with real architecture.

The 2023 vintage captures Carneros at its best: a long, even growing season shaped by coastal fog and cool Pacific winds. The vines had time to ripen slowly, building concentration without losing the bright acidity that makes Napa Chardonnay worth opening.

In the glass, this is rich without being heavy—golden apple and ripe peach layered with baking spice and a whisper of vanilla from the barrel work. The texture is creamy but focused, with the kind of balanced finish that keeps you reaching for another pour. 93 points from James Suckling backs what the fruit already proves: this is Chardonnay built to impress at the table, not just on paper.

Sustainably farmed, thoughtfully made, and priced like Cakebread remembered not everyone needs to mortgage the house for a serious bottle. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it for a few years—it'll reward either move.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Poached pear, lemon, honeyed white flowers, and hints of cream corn all shine in the 2023 Chardonnay Reserve, a medium-bodied, balanced Chardonnay that has a fresh, focused mouthfeel and a great finish. It's beautifully done and brings classic California fruit with class. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck

Generous aromas of preserved lemons, flint, grapefruit and brioche. The palate is full-bodied with a creamy, medium-bodied mouthfeel and bright acidity, giving flavors of yellow apples, sliced pears and baking spices. Well balanced, with underlying power. ~93 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Cakebread Cellars

Cakebread Cellars is a family-owned winery in Rutherford, Napa Valley, founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread. Today, the family farms more than 584 acres of vineyards across Napa Valley and Anderson Valley, cultivating a patchwork of soils, microclimates, and grape varieties. The winery is best known for its Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which are distributed internationally, and it produces around 200,000 cases a year. It started with a single parcel of Sauvignon Blanc and quickly became a benchmark for approachable yet serious California wine, anchored by a Chardonnay that balances richness and freshness. Cakebread is also Napa Green certified, with more than four decades of focus on quality, consistency, and continuity—both in the vineyards and in the team behind them.
