About The Wine

$16.99 Chardonnay that drinks like you spent twice as much. Here's why.

Domaine Castelnau sits within centuries-old walls halfway between the Mediterranean and the Massif Central foothills, where Beatrice and Christophe Muret farm clay-limestone hillsides at 5,000 vines per hectare. High-density planting on these soils gives the fruit concentration you'd expect from appellations charging double.

The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in stainless, then finished with a few months in quality oak — enough to add structure without burying the fruit. The moderate scale lets the entire process stay hands-on, and it shows in the glass.

Pale yellow with green glints. The nose opens on banana and coconut, then unfolds into yellow peach, citrus, pineapple. The attack is lively and fruity; the mid-palate has volume but stays balanced. Finish carries linden, chamomile, and a long fruity close. This is Languedoc Chardonnay punching well above its weight class — the kind of bottle that makes you question what you've been paying for supermarket Chard.

THE PRODUCER

Domaine de Castelnau

Castelnau is gifted with a fine winemaking family, Roland and Anne-Marie Coustal, who make wine under the name Terres Georges. The moderate scale of production allows the entire process to be undertaken by hand. Many of the wines from this cave have won awards at the major European French wine festivals. The cave is open to the public for tasting sessions with the winemakers on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Wine production has gone on in this area of France for centuries. Domaine Castelnau is situated within centuries-old walls halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Massif Central foothills. The modern winery is operated by Béatrice and Christophe Muret.
