About The Wine

Perched high above the Napa Valley floor on the steep, rocky slopes of Pritchard Hill, Chappellet has spent over five decades proving that the best Cabernet Sauvignon in California doesn't grow on the valley floor — it grows on the mountain. The dry, mineral-driven soils of this legendary hillside site stress the vines just enough to concentrate flavor into small, intensely powerful berries, giving Chappellet's wines a structure and aging potential that flatland Cabs simply can't touch. This is mountain fruit at its most serious, and Pritchard Hill has become one of the most revered addresses in all of Napa Valley because of it.

Chappellet's story starts in the late 1960s, when Donn and Molly Chappellet fell for the wild, dramatic beauty of Pritchard Hill and, on the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff, staked their claim on its eastern slopes. They were among the very first to pioneer high-elevation hillside planting in Napa Valley — a bet that took real vision at the time and has since influenced generations of vintners who followed. More than fifty years later, Chappellet remains one of the last great family-owned wineries in Napa Valley, with the second generation now carrying the torch and doubling down on sustainable, quality-first farming across the estate.

The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine that built this reputation. It's been Chappellet's flagship release for over three decades — the benchmark expression of everything Pritchard Hill does best: powerful structure, real aging potential, and a concentrated, seductive core of fruit that makes it approachable even in its youth. Anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon and rounded out with Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Merlot from the estate's own hillside vineyards, this is the kind of bottle that over-delivers against wines twice its price.

The 2023 vintage is drawing serious attention from the critics. James Suckling calls out its dense dark-fruit character — layers of currant, blackberry compote, coffee bean, tobacco leaf, and mulberry — backed by a full-bodied palate with finely tuned tannins and balanced acidity that carries into a long, textural finish. It's the kind of review that puts this vintage squarely in the conversation with Chappellet's best recent releases, and stock at this price point won't last.

The 2023 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a densely packed nose of black currant, blackberry compote, and mulberry, layered with notes of coffee bean and tobacco leaf. A subtle earthiness sets this vintage apart, with hints of red currant, dusty mocha, and wild mountain herb weaving through the darker fruit. Charred, smoky oak frames the wine rather than sweetening it, while moderate, finely tuned tannins and bright acidity keep everything in balance through a long, textural, concentrated finish. Drink now with a great decant, or hold — this is built to age.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Densely packed with dark-fruit aromas of currants, blackberry compote, coffee beans, tobacco leaves and mulberries. The palate is full-bodied with finely tuned tannins and balanced acidity that lead into a textural, concentrated finish. Nicely constructed with freshness beneath the power. Drink or hold. ~94 James Suckling

Dense purple-hued, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature offers up cassis, ripe blue fruits, graphite, scorched earth, and leafy tobacco, with a Pauillac-like lead pencil character that develops as the wine sits in the glass. It's medium to full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with ripe tannins and nicely integrated acidity. Very much in the style of the vintage, it should have 15-20 years of overall longevity. Drink 2025-2045. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck

Another excellent wine slated for release in early 2026, Chappellet's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature combines hints of scorched oak and mocha with mixed red and black cherries, plus underlying cassis fruit. Sourced from various mountain sites in Napa Valley, it's medium- to full-bodied, richly textured and concentrated, with a long, velvety finish. ~93 Wine Advocate
