2023 Chateau de Brague Bordeaux Semillon

Here's a wine most people sleep on: white Bordeaux built around Semillon instead of Sauvignon Blanc. Château de Brague has been quietly proving why that's a mistake since the Renaissance, when the estate first began watching over its 60-plus hectare property on the right bank of the Dordogne, just minutes from the appellations of Fronsac and Saint-Émilion. This is old-family, old-vine Bordeaux — the same estate has been shepherded by the same family for three generations, working a property split between a limestone plateau and a south-facing clay hillside, with the 18th-century château itself planted right in the middle of it all.

While the estate's reds lean on the classic Right Bank trio of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, the white is where Château de Brague really sets itself apart. Semillon has been the star grape here for 90 years, planted on vines dating back to 1951 and grown on the clay-limestone plateau directly in front of the château. That's over seven decades of root depth going into this bottle — a level of vine age you almost never see in an entry-tier white Bordeaux, rounded out with a supporting cast of Sauvignon.

The result is a white Bordeaux that intentionally breaks from the crisp, citrus-driven style most people expect. This is a rounder, more generously fruited expression — built for roundness and fat rather than razor acidity, with the estate itself describing the goal as a soft, balanced drinking experience rather than a lean, austere one. It's proof that Semillon, when it's given old vines and real attention, deserves way more attention than it gets.
