About The Wine

Fieuzal makes a red and a white on the same Left Bank estate. In 2023, the white is the one I'd buy.

The estate sits in Leognan, the village that gives Pessac-Leognan half its name. Lochlann Quinn has owned it since 2001. Stephen Carrier makes the wine, with Thomas Duclos consulting. The white vines cover about 10 hectares of clay-limestone, soil that keeps the fruit fresh.

The 2023 is 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon, picked between August 28 and September 4. Carrier credits the rain. His deep gravel soils held that water, and the vines never went thirsty. There is no malolactic fermentation, so the acidity stays bright. The wine ages in a mix of acacia and oak barrels.

In the glass it is pear, white peach and candied lemon, then flint and chalk as it opens up. The Semillon gives it flesh and the Sauvignon keeps it lifted. The finish is long and salty.

Drink it now with oysters or a whole roasted fish, or put a few bottles away until the early 2030s. Chill it, but not too hard.

60% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Semillon.

Pear, white peach, apricot and candied lemon lead, with spring flowers behind them. Flint and chalk come up with air. The palate is medium to full, fleshy and pure, carried by bright acidity. It has a crystalline texture and finishes long, perfumed and saline, with a light bitter edge that should help it age.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Blanc from de Fieuzal is another superb rendition at this address, revealing a complex and attractive bouquet of pear, white peach, spring flowers and confit citrus. Medium- to full-bodied, enveloping and fleshy, it is built around a generous core of fruit framed by racy acidity and a crystalline texture, concluding with a long, perfumed and saline finish. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A brilliant, impeccably made Pessac, the 2023 Château De Fieuzal Blanc is based on 60% Sauvignon and 40% Semillon and offers beautiful notes of ripe citrus, lime, crushed stone, and minty flowers. Medium-bodied, fresh, focused, and elegant on the palate, it has integrated acidity and a great finish. This is one classic white that does everything right! It will keep for 15 years in cold cellars. Drink 2026-2041. ~95 Jeb Dunnuck

Great aromatics, vanilla, lemon verbena, caramel and peach - even a touch of pineapple. Clean and lively, great energy with a soft lemon and creamy peach core, ending floral and stony. I like this, plenty of easy flavour with a long finish. ~94 Decanter

Notes of sliced pears, green apples, quince and lemon blossoms come through clearly, with a medium body and lemon drop, dried apple, lime and crushed stone undertones. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling

The wine is rounded, with ripe tropical fruits mingled with kiwi. Its grapefruit aroma and touch of spice from the wood aging are refreshing and perfumed. Abeille (the bee) is Château de Fieuzal's second brand. Drink the wine from later this year. ~ 91 Wine Enthusiast
