About The Wine

Montviel is where Catherine Pere-Verge started. She bought it in 1985, her first estate in Pomerol, and went on to add Le Gay and La Violette.

She brought in her friend Michel Rolland as consultant with the 1988 vintage. Since her death in 2013, her son Henri Parent has run the family estates.

The best parcels sit on clay and gravel near Chateau Clinet. Each one is vinified on its own, in small lots, before the blend comes together.

The 2023 is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It aged in barrels that had already held one vintage of Le Gay and La Violette. Same family, same oak, one estate over.

In the glass it is red plum, cedar, tobacco and mint, with a flash of blood orange. The tannins are silky and the finish is juicy. This is Pomerol for drinking, not for waiting.

I would open it this winter with roast duck and not think twice.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Minty, with cherries, blackberries and graphite. The palate is round and velvety, with focused tannins that frame the precise dark fruit, showing concentration balanced by a delineated structure. Better from 2027, but already a joy to taste. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections. Fine blackberryish fruit, a hint of cherries and liquorice, a touch of fine oak, orange zest underneath. Juicy, sweet and with good freshness, fine, supporting tannins, rich in finesse, mineral, blackberries in the aftertaste, good length and certain ageing potential.~ 94 Falstaff

Fresh and lifted, this has bounce and some energy to it with strawberry and cherry fruit and liquorice-laced tannins. Despite the intensity of flavour it feels hands off in terms of texture which is really nice. Shiny and glossy, still a touch savoury and bitter, but this is very enjoyable with balance. Feels like more estate signature than winemaking signature which is nice.~ 93 Decanter

This is friendly and relatively open-knit, with rooibos tea, fresh damson plum and cherry compote notes forming a succulent core. The silky structure and a pretty ripple of latent acidity carry the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2037. 1,610 cases made. ~ 92 Wine Spectator

The 2023 Montviel is laced with crushed flowers, ripe red cherry fruit, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and blood orange. This racy, mid-weight Pomerol is all charm. Its balance and sensuality are impeccable. Montviel is a blend of many parcels across the appellation, an approach that works quite well in challenging years. ~ 92 Vinous Media

Darker fruits, spicy wood, and graphite define the 2023 Château Montviel, a terrific, concentrated, and textured Pomerol that brings a more modern style without losing its classic Pomerol character. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, layered mouthfeel, ample mid-palate depth, and ripe tannins. Give it 3-4 years and drink over the following 15 or more. Drink 2029-2044. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck

THE PRODUCER

Chateau Montviel

Château Montviel is a Pomerol estate on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, with a vineyard spread across multiple parcels and terroirs throughout the appellation. Acquired by Catherine Péré-Vergé in 1985, the property has since become known for its Merlot-driven wines, supported by Cabernet Franc and shaped by clay and gravel soils. Today, the estate focuses on parcel-by-parcel winemaking to preserve the character of its diverse vineyards, producing Pomerols that balance ripe fruit and richness with freshness, elegance, and refined tannins.
