About The Wine

Clos du Marquis is made by the same team as Léoville Las Cases, one of Bordeaux's great Second Growths. That's the headline. Here's the part most people get wrong.

This is not the second wine of Las Cases. It's a separate vineyard with its own Saint-Julien terroir, farmed by the Delon family since the first vintage in 1902. The plots sit slightly west of the old Léoville land, ringed by Classified Growths like Léoville Poyferré and Léoville Barton. The sandy-clay gravel ripens a touch later and gives the wine its own voice. Same family, same standards, different dirt.

The 2023 is a serious Left Bank Cabernet. 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new oak. It's also the first vintage made in the estate's brand-new winery. The team went from 40 fermentation vats to 80, plus 30 small microvinification tanks. More precision, plot by plot, and you can taste the extra detail.

2023 gave the Médoc fresh, classically structured wines. This one delivers cassis, blackberry, cedar, and graphite over fine, integrated tannins and a saline, lifted finish. James Suckling scored it 95-96 and asked whether it might beat the 2022. It's built to age a decade or two.

For a wine from the Las Cases team, off top Saint-Julien terroir, this is Second-Growth quality without the Second-Growth invoice. I'd cellar a few and drink the rest over the next fifteen years.

Give it a decant now, or forget it in the cellar until 2030.

Deep garnet-purple. Cassis, fresh plums, and blackberry lead, with cedar chest, graphite, violet, and Provençal herbs behind them. Medium to full-bodied and fleshy but structured, with vivid acidity, fine integrated tannins, and a creamy touch of new oak over a taut, saline, mineral-laced finish. 13.5% alcohol, 50% new oak. Serious and built to age — decant now, or hold to 2030 and beyond.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Fresh and floral, showing lilac, mint and light stone aromas that follow through to a medium body with really fine, broad tannins that fan out on the palate. Creamy and textural with lovely fruit and purity. Extremely long and poised. First year made in a new cellar. A blend of 56% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot and 9% cabernet franc. Very drinkable now but needs three to four years of bottle aging to come together. ~95 James Suckling

A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc that spent 16 months in 50% new French oak, the 2023 Clos Du Marquis is a bigger, richer wine in the vintage. Its deep purple/plum hue is followed by blockbuster aromatics of blackcurrants, smoke, tobacco, spice, and chocolate. Rich, full-bodied, deep, and layered on the palate, it has ample mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, nicely integrated oak, and a great finish. ~ 95 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2023 Clos du Marquis might very well be the best Clos du Marquis I have ever tasted. A wine of freshness and verve, the 2023 is all nuance. Sweet red plum, blood orange, spice, flowers, mint and white pepper are all finely cut. The 2023 shows more vibrancy, less oak extraction and more refined tannins than in the past. It’s a glorious wine in every way. This early tasting is hugely promising. Clos du Marquis could turn out to be one of the real surprises of 2023. ~95 Vinous Media

From a single, walled vineyard, the wine moves eas- ily between density and juicy black fruits. It has both power and great fruitiness. The wine is full of promise with its dark-chocolate aroma. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

Great aromatics, fresh and lively but deep and opulent too - ripe blackcurrant and plum with some cool blueberries. Smooth and sumptuous, classy and finessed. A complete wine - this has structure and a certain level of power but with such fine tannins, almost creamy. Layered and complex but effortless in its construction. Really beautifully delivered. Crunchy, but chalky, some minerality and mouthwatering acidity. Brilliant harmony and balance and sense of weight in terms of texture. ~94 Decanter

The 2023 Clos du Marquis is an attractive classic, offering up notes of cassis and licorice mingled with hints of mint, rose petal and pencil lead. Medium- to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's pure and lively, with sweet tannins and succulent acids to frame its fleshy, layered core of fruit. ~ 93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is solid, with cassis and boysenberry puree flavors stitched together with lightly singed apple wood, dried anise and black tea notes. A strong graphite edge drives the finish. There’s no bombast at all, though, just focus and definition. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. ~ 93 Wine Spectator
