2023 Domaine Daniel Reverdy & Fils Sancerre Le Clos de Chaudenay

Sancerre has a well-earned reputation for crisp, refreshing whites — the kind of wine you reach for at a bistro or crack open on a warm evening without overthinking it. The Clos de Chaudenay is something different. This is the Sancerre that serious white wine drinkers collect alongside great Chablis and white Burgundy: structured, mineral-driven, and genuinely built to evolve in the cellar.

The vineyard sits just outside the village of Verdigny on a south-facing mound of pure Kimmeridgian limestone — the same ancient chalky bedrock that gives top Chablis and Champagne their signature mineral spine. The name "Chaudenay" translates literally as "hot spot," and the extra sun exposure ripens the fruit to a depth and concentration you simply don't find in most Sancerre at any price point.

The Reverdy family farms 16 hectares spread across roughly 50 plots in the appellation, drawing from some of its most storied sites. But the Clos de Chaudenay — a walled single-vineyard parcel planted to 40-year-old vines — is his flagship. In the cellar, he ferments in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation, preserving the wine's electric freshness, then ages 20% of the blend in old, neutral 600-liter oak barrels. That subtle oak touch adds a seamless, creamy texture without a hint of vanilla or toast — giving this wine a complexity that's rare for the appellation.
