About The Wine

Most of the vines that made this wine were planted before World War I. That is not marketing. That is the vineyard.

Ürziger Würzgarten is the strangest great site on the Mosel.

Where the rest of the river runs on blue-grey slate, Würzgarten is a blazing red amphitheater of weathered volcanic rock, iron-rich enough to color the whole hillside. Germans call it the spice garden, and once you smell what it does to Riesling you stop arguing with the name.

Dr. Loosen's parcel here sits directly behind the village, still known by its old name, Urglück, planted to ungrafted vines over 120 years old on original rootstock. Phylloxera never took hold in the Mosel, so these vines were never grafted onto anything. They are the real thing, still on their own roots.

Erni Loosen took over the family estate in 1988 and spent the next three decades proving that the Mosel could make serious dry Riesling, not just sweet. Grosses Gewächs is the German answer to grand cru: an estate's best dry wine from its best classified site. This is his.

The winemaking is deliberately hands-off. Fermented with wild yeast in traditional 1,000-liter Fuder casks, then left on the full lees for twelve months with no stirring. That gives you texture without weight. It finishes dry at 8.7 grams of residual sugar against 7.1 grams of acid, and it carries only 12.5% alcohol, which is why a glass of this wakes your palate up instead of flattening it.

Drink it now with something rich and it will cut straight through.

Put it away for five years and it will be a different, better wine. Either way, this is what the Mosel is capable of when nobody takes a shortcut.

100% Riesling, from ungrafted vines over 120 years old on red volcanic rock.

The nose is slow to open and worth the wait: crushed herbs, smoke, spice, and stone rather than obvious fruit. Give it air and citrus arrives — navel orange peel, tangerine, ripe lemon — layered over pear and a distinctly savory, saline edge.

The palate is where the site announces itself. Concentrated and crystalline at the same time, with a pithy phenolic grip that gives it real structure.

Total acidity of 7.1 g/L keeps everything taut and mouthwatering. It finishes dry, long, and stony, with the spice character returning on the back end.

Drinking well now with air or a decanter. Built to reward five to ten years in the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

So effusive, this leaps and bounds over your palate with youthful energy. Fantastic concentration and vitality on the medium-bodied palate. Racy and intensely herbal and spicy in the very long, focused finish. Drink from release. ~96 James Suckling

The 2023 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs has a lovely ethereal lift of crushed yarrow. The palate is absolutely pithy, with Navel orange peel and vivid tangerine notes, framed by crushed yarrow savor and mouthwatering stoniness. It's beautifully long and incisive.~94-96 Vinous

The 2023 Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben represents the impressively steep, red-colored, iron-rich cru perfectly well on the fragrant, very elegant, deep, intense and complex nose that is pure, fresh and refined but also tropical, saline and smoky. Round and crystalline on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and elegant, deeply structured but also generous and lush, nevertheless precise and saline Würzgarten with class and style. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in December 2024. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Spice garden on the nose, nettle, chervil, marjoram, floral notes, snowdrops, ripe lemons, peach, allspice. Taut on the palate, lively acidity with tension meets a supple base, pithy phenolics, fresh, still restrained fruit, lots of savouriness, good certain ageing potential. ~93-95 Falstaff
