About The Wine

For over a century, the Pelissa family has been synonymous with Napa Valley’s most prestigious appellations—Oakville and Yountville. Today, their legacy endures through Ghost Block Estate Wines, where uncompromising quality meets a profound dedication to sustainability. Across 650 acres of organically farmed vineyards, Ghost Block meticulously cultivates grapes that reflect the essence of Napa’s terroir in every bottle.

The 2023 Ghost Block’s Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced entirely from the winery’s Ghost Block Vineyard in Yountville, bordering the cemetery where the town’s founder, George Yount, lies to rest. The crown jewel of the family’s estate, these prime 18 acres are planted 100% to Cabernet Sauvignon on top of rarely found exposed vertical bedding of tertiary volcanics. Beautiful aromas of blackberry compote, plum jam, and black & red currant.

At the helm of winemaking is Kristi Koford, who has crafted Ghost Block wines since 2001. With a deep background in both technical winemaking and behavioral studies, Kristi brings an innovative, yet approachable touch to her craft. Her meticulous approach ensures every bottle is a masterwork, tailored to reflect both the vineyard's spirit and the vision of its creators. As she so aptly puts it, "We make every effort to understand and implement our clients’ goals."

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Beautiful aromas of blackberry compote, plum jam, and black & red currant are complemented by subtle notes of crème de cassis and vanilla.

The first sip coats your palate with silky tannins and delicate layers of bramble fruit to offer a well-balanced, approachable, and polished wine. The oak complexity of the wine is integrated amongst the black & blue fruits, with the lovely notes of warm fall spices and savory thyme.

The refined tannins accompany these flavors for a medium-bodied finish. This Cabernet is crafted to enjoy now, yet will continue to develop greater character and complexity if cellared through 2038.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Broad and juicy, this lets a wave of blackberry and black cherry compote spill forth, backed by iris, ink and anise details. Singed apple wood and a hint of bay leaf add range on the finish, which lingers steadily, with succulent fruit. Best from 2027 through 2040. 1,200 cases made. ~94 Wine Spctator

THE PRODUCER

Ghost Block

The Pelissa family has farmed Napa since 1903. For most of that century, they grew the grapes and other wineries put their names on the bottles.

In 2006, they started keeping the best fruit for themselves. Ghost Block draws from four organic family vineyards: Ghost Block and MorgaenLee in Yountville, and Pelissa and Rock Cairn in Oakville. Longtime winemaker Kristi Koford makes the wines in small lots.

The name comes from a bar story. In the early '80s, an old-timer told owner Andy Hoxsey he'd seen the ghost of George Yount, Yountville's founder, walking out of the Pioneer Cemetery and through the family's vineyard. Andy trademarked the name the next morning.

A century of farming, one ghost, and fruit that other wineries still line up for.
