About The Wine

Hartford Family Winery has been pulling off the near-impossible since 1994: making Pinot Noir and Zinfandel at a level that earned them Artisan Winery of the Year from Wine & Spirits twice, recognition from Robert Parker as one of Northern California's finest producers, and a spot on the White House table. That's the kind of track record that makes a $39.50 Zinfandel worth paying attention to.

The Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard is the real story here. Seven acres of head-trained, dry-farmed vines planted in 1890 — over 130 years old — hand-tended by the Fanucchi family for nearly three decades. The sandy loam soils are low in pH and fertility, which starves the old vines just enough to produce tiny, concentrated berries with the bright cherry and blackberry fruit Russian River Valley does better than anywhere else. Bright, high-tone cherry is the tell: Fanucchi-Wood Road terroir in the glass.

Winemaker Tiaan Lordan, a Stellenbosch grad who worked his way up from intern to head winemaker in 2018, aged the 2023 in 54% new French oak for nine months. The result is structured by firm, grainy tannins and vibrant acidity — the kind of backbone that lets a Zinfandel age, not just drink young.

Dark berries, cherry, and licorice open the glass, with chocolate shavings and espresso on the back end. Silky on the attack, then those dry tannins grip the finish. Concentrated, full-bodied, old-school in the best sense — this is what Russian River Valley Zinfandel tastes like when it's done right. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it for five years; the structure will hold.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2023 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard comes from vines planted more than a century ago, and the wine matured for 10 months in 55% new French oak. It has slowly unfurling scents of wild berries, peach, graham cracker, mossy bark, earth and floral perfume. The full-bodied palate is bursting with concentrated, spicy flavors. It’s structured by firm, grainy tannins and vibrant acidity and has a long, complex finish. 240 cases were made. ~ 95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A deeper ruby/magenta color, there’s more Petite Sirah in the field blend for the 2023 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard, which has darker, more intense notes of cigar box, blackberries, cherry preserve, dark spices, lavender, and mossy forest earth. The palate is full-bodied, with ripe tannins, even acidity, and a broader feel on the finish. It has a deeper tannin structure and a bit more richness of earth and grip on the finish, with a slightly more a rustic feel to its structure, but it’s well-balanced and can handle richer marbled steak and braised meat. ~ 94 Jeb Dunnuck

The nose of this spicy Zin leads with aromas of spiced raspberry compote, accented by purple flowers, cinnamon, and dry cocoa. The palate gives flavors of freshly crushed cherry, licorice, and cracked pepper in a framework of rich tannin. Best from 2028. ~ 93 Wine Enthusiast

Dark and brooding, but a thread of fresh acidity keeps this moving along, with blackberry, licorice and savory black pepper flavors that build toward broad-shouldered tannins. Best from 2026 through 2035. 245 cases made.~ 92 Wine Spectator
