About The Wine

Henri Bourgeois has been making wine in Sancerre since the 1690s — over 330 years, ten generations, and still family-run. Henri himself founded the modern estate in the 1950s with two hectares on the slopes of Chavignol; his sons Jean-Marie and Remi expanded the holdings to seventy hectares across Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, all farmed organically today. In 2000 the family planted 109 hectares in New Zealand's Marlborough — proof that when you've mastered one terroir for three centuries, you're confident enough to start over halfway around the world.

Sancerre Rouge is the appellation's quiet secret. While the world chases white Sancerre, red accounts for less than twenty percent of production — Pinot Noir from the same limestone and flint soils that give the Sauvignon its spine. The chalk delivers tension, the cool continental climate keeps the fruit bright, and the best examples taste like Burgundy's Loire cousin: less oak, more energy, and half the price.

This 2023 landed a 90 from Vinous and a rave from James Suckling: "juicy and delicious pinot noir…vivid and elegant with a refreshing finish." The wine shows red cherries, raspberries, and mild spice on the nose, medium body with fine tannins, and the kind of fresh acidity that makes you pour a second glass before the first is gone. It's textbook Sancerre Pinot — bright, racy, and built for the table.

Pull the cork tonight. The wine is ready now, drinks beautifully chilled, and pairs with everything from roast chicken to grilled salmon. Ten generations of Bourgeois family knowledge, organic farming, and 330 years of terroir mastery — all for $41.50.
