About The Wine

Tucked into the rolling limestone hills southwest of Volnay, Auxey-Duresses is one of Burgundy's last true insider's addresses — a village overshadowed for decades by its famous neighbors, Meursault and Volnay, and prized precisely because of it. This is where Domaine Henri Latour et Fils has quietly farmed for seven generations, turning a corner of the Côte de Beaune that most collectors overlook into one of the region's smartest buys.

The estate is a family affair through and through: brothers François and Sylvain Latour manage the 37-acre property with the same lutte raisonnée philosophy their family has practiced for generations — sustainable, low-intervention farming that treats agrochemicals as a last resort, not a routine. Every grape is hand-harvested and sorted twice, once in the vineyard and again on the sorting table back at the domaine, before it ever sees a fermenter.

This Vieilles Vignes bottling comes from vines 50 to 70 years old, planted in the limestone-rich soils that give Auxey-Duresses its structure and lift. Old vines like these naturally yield less fruit, but what they give up in volume they return in concentration — riper, more layered, more sappy wines than younger plantings can produce. It's the reason serious Pinot Noir collectors have started quietly buying up Auxey-Duresses by the case: the fruit quality rivals Volnay, but the price tag hasn't caught up yet.

Domaine Henri Latour has built its reputation the old-fashioned way — vintage after vintage of honest, terroir-true Burgundy that earns respect from critics and collectors alike, including past recognition in the Guide Hachette des Vins. The 2023 vintage continues that trajectory, and with global demand (and prices) for red Burgundy climbing steadily over the last decade, this remains one of the last great values left in the category.

The 2023 pours a bright, clear ruby in the glass and opens with a layered nose of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, cocoa and a whisper of forest floor — classic old-vine Auxey-Duresses character. On the palate it's light yet intense, with a soft, rounded texture and tannins that fold seamlessly into the fruit. Ten months in French oak (2-4 year old barrels) add a gentle spice and subtle toast without ever overpowering the pure red and black fruit at its core. The finish is long, smooth and lifted by vibrant acidity, closing on an elegant note of earthiness that lingers well after the glass is empty.

THE PRODUCER

Henri Latour Et Fils

Domaine Henri Latour et Fils is a 37-acre estate owned and managed by brothers, Francois and Sylvan Latour, in Auxey-Duresses. They represent the 7th generation of growers. The vineyards— with vines that are 50 to 70 years old—are farmed sustainably using the lutte raisonnée philosophy, an approach that embraces using agrochemicals when only absolutely necessary. The fruit is hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard and again when it arrives at the Domaine via a sorting table. The vines and the grapes are cared for with all the respect they are due. The end result is a complex, quality Burgundy that also just happens to be a downright steal.
