About The Wine

The Pescarmona family acquired Lagarde in 1969. They quickly became a trendsetter by being the first Latin American producer to plant non-traditional varieties such as Viognier and Moscato Bianco. Today, the winery and estate are run by third-generation Pescarmonas, sisters Sofia and Lucila Pescarmona.

Under their direction, Lagarde creates exceptional terroir character wines that reflect a strong, sustainable commitment to the land and its people.

Lagarde's Guarda' Chardonnay is an exemplification of the work and time invested in a special vineyard, the age of the vines, and treatment. This bottling comes from the Tupungato vineyard in one of Mendoza's premier appellations, Gualtallary.

The Tupungato vineyard is next to one of Argentina's finest Grand Cru vineyards, the Adrianna Vineyard which consistently produces 100+ wines and over $100 a bottle.

100% Chardonnay.

Bright and mineral-driven, this Chardonnay showcases its stony soils with clarity and precision. Aged half in French oak (new and used) and half in stainless steel, it balances richness with freshness.

The nose opens with subtle buttery notes layered over zesty tangerine, crisp apple, ripe pear, and hints of feijoa. On the palate, a gentle honeyed nuance adds depth, while vibrant acidity keeps everything lifted and focused through a clean, energetic finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A Chardonnay from Gualtallary, 50% of the 2023 Guarda spent a year in used oak barrels. This greenish-hued wine offers herbal notes with hints of pear, chamomile and a nutty layer. Dry, lean and refreshing, the warm vintage softens its high-altitude character, resulting in a light mouthfeel. Still, it maintains a fruit-forward profile. ~ 91 Vinous Media

The 2023 Guarda Chardonnay fermented in equal parts stainless tank (without malolactic conversion) and 500-liter barrels (with regular bâtonnage.) It opens with a tangy, energetic nose of orange rinds, yellow apples and a gentle touch of lees-derived complexity. The palate is succulent and textural, transitioning to a focused, lively finish underpinned with chalky minerality. This is a highlight of the Lagarde range and a fantastic value. ~ 91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Hazelnuts, pears and apricots on the nose. Salty, stony undertones. It’s full-bodied, clean and straightforward. Drink now. ~ 90 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Bodega Lagarde

Bodega Lagarde is a pioneering, family-run estate in Mendoza, led today by third-generation sisters Sofía and Lucila Pescarmona. Known for innovation and sustainability, the Pescarmona family helped reshape Argentine wine by introducing non-traditional varieties and championing site-driven winemaking long before it was a trend.

Their high-altitude vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and Tupungato—bordering iconic sites like the Adrianna Vineyard—produce elegantly crafted wines that capture the purity, energy, and character of Mendoza’s most coveted terroirs.
