About The Wine

Luca is the private label of Dr. Laura Catena — fourth-generation Argentine vintner, Harvard-trained biologist and Stanford-trained physician, author, and arguably the most influential ambassador for Argentine wine in the world. Recognized internationally as the "face" of Argentine wine, she founded Luca in 1999, naming it after her firstborn son, with a singular vision: small-batch production, the highest possible quality, and a fierce commitment to terroir that could rival the great wines of the world.

Her accolades are extensive. Laura was named "Woman of the Year" by The Drinks Business in 2022, received the Meininger "Outstanding Achievement Award," and was named "Old Vine Hero" by The Old Vine Conference — its inaugural recipient, in 2023. She was also recognized as one of Wine Business Monthly's 2025 Wine Industry Leaders and, in 2023, was named Honorary President of the WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust). She is the author of three books, including Vino Argentino, Argentina's definitive wine guide.

The Catena name is foundational to Argentine wine's standing in the United States. Through the family's Bodega Catena Zapata — the country's oldest family-owned winery, founded in 1902 — the Catenas pioneered high-altitude viticulture in the Uco Valley and were central to establishing Argentine Malbec as a serious, age-worthy, collectible category on American shelves and wine lists. Laura's father, Nicolás Catena Zapata, was named Decanter Man of the Year in 2009 — the first South American to receive the honor — along with Wine Spectator's Distinguished Service Award and Der Feinschmecker's Lifetime Achievement Award.

With Luca, Laura pioneered grower relationships across Mendoza, seeking out small old-vine vineyards whose fruit had previously been lost to bulk wine. Luca is the first Argentine winery to bottle all of its Malbec exclusively from old vines. Winemaking is led by Luis Reginato, a second-generation winemaker and viticulturist who has worked with the Catena family since 1999 and serves as Vineyard Director for the Catena Zapata family vineyards. Reginato helped create a Sustainability Certification for Argentina and provided the scientific basis for establishing Paraje Altamira as a formal appellation in the Uco Valley.

The Old Vine Malbec is sourced from prized Uco Valley sites including La Consulta, Paraje Altamira, and Gualtallary, where vines reaching up to roughly 80 years old grow at around 1,000 meters elevation on sandy, stony soils, farmed organically and harvested by hand. The high altitude and old, ungrafted vines yield fruit of unusual concentration and complexity.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This shows plums, bark and charcoal on the nose. The palate is precise, sharp, linear and super elegant, with velvety tannins and crunchy fruit. It’s long, refined and very stylish. Drink now.~96 James Suckling

Luca is rescuing old vineyards in the Uco Valley, primarily in La Consulta, Altamira, and areas of Tupungato, north of the Uco River. Some of these vineyards are over a hundred years old, and their vines are being collected for planting and genetic preservation. They are among the first Malbecs to arrive in the region. This wine comes from those old vines; a selection that has yielded a delicious wine, full of ripe red fruit, succulent, with round, but not mushy, tannins. A classic example of Uco Malbec, at its most succulent.. ~95 Patricio Tapia, Descorchados

Clear notes of plum, blackberry, a hint of balsamic herbs and a touch of jam. ~93 Vinous

~92 Tim Atkin , Master of Wine

The 2023 Old Vine Malbec combines ungrafted vines from six Uco Valley growers who previously sold grapes for use in bulk wines. It was destemmed and fermented in stainless tank before maturing for 12 months in 35% new barrique. Opening with a pleasant nose of red and blue fruits, anise and dried spices, the palate is plush and straightforward, concluding with a lifted, fragrant finish. ~91 Wine Advocate

The nose reveals enticing aromas of crushed berries leading the way to a juicy palate filled with rich dark fruit flavors and a hint of rosemary. Framed by gripping tannins and vibrant acidity, this full-bodied Malbec features a distinctive chalky texture and a long lasting finish. ~91 Wine Enthusiast

Hints of roasted herbs and loam lead but quickly give way to the core flavors of Santa Rosa plum and cherry, culminating with crunchy acidity, mineral and cocoa powder notes that fill out the structured finish. ~91 Wine Spectator

THE PRODUCER

Luca

Luca is Laura Catena's old-vine project in the Uco Valley, named for her first son and launched the year he was born. It was among the first Argentine labels to bottle Malbec entirely from old, ungrafted vines — the bet being that older fruit carries more genetic depth than young plantings can fake. The wines come off high-altitude sites near 3,500 feet, where wide day-night temperature swings keep the fruit bright instead of jammy.
