About The Wine

Howell Mountain stands apart in Napa Valley — perched 1,400 to 2,200 feet above the valley floor, above the fog line, where mountain sun and volcanic soils produce Cabernet Sauvignon with structure that ages like Bordeaux and concentration that rivals Oakville at twice the price. Outpost has been farming these high-elevation vineyards since the early 2000s, securing fruit from some of the appellation's most coveted sites. This isn't valley-floor Cab smoothed for early drinking — it's mountain wine built for the cellar.

The 2023 vintage delivered everything Howell Mountain does best. Abundant winter rainfall recharged the mountain's water reserves, and a cool spring extended budbreak while promoting vigorous vine growth. The vineyards sit high enough that steady, uniform ripening continued through harvest, producing grapes with dense color, excellent concentration, bright acidity, and finely polished tannins — the exact profile that makes mountain Cabernet worth the hunt.

The wine shows what the vintage promised: black currants and blackberries, black olives and dark chocolate on the nose, then a textural, rounded palate with mineral tension that snaps into focus on the finish. Thyme and sage fold into blackcurrant fruit, full-bodied and supple with a silky feel. The finish stretches long, trailing mocha and dark chocolate. This is Cabernet with architecture — saturated, sappy, densely packed with boysenberry, acai, and blackberry compote, built to cellar a decade or drink now with the right steak.

Six bottles at $139 for mountain Cabernet from a vintage this clean is the kind of arbitrage that makes sense when you buy pallets and skip the middlemen. Pull the cork tonight or cellar it through the next decade — it'll reward either decision.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"There’s lovely depth of dark fruit balanced by lifted perfume and mineral undertones. Aromas of black currants, blackberries, spices, black olives and dark chocolate. The palate is textural and rounded with mineral tension, leading to a vibrant, precise and focused finish. The vintage shines. Drink or hold." ~96 James Suckling

"Darker currants, dark chocolate, smoked tobacco, and crushed stone intermixed with classic Howell Mountain herbal nuances all shine in the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 20 months in French oak, it's medium to full-bodied and has a pure, layered, concentrated mouthfeel with beautiful tannins, the freshness and focus of the vintage, and a great finish. This beauty will drink well for 20-25 years. Drink 2025-2050." ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is gorgeous. Dark, vibrant and super expressive, the 2023 has a lot to offer. A blast of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and new leather makes a strong opening statement. This bold, luscious Cabernet is a fine bridge to the higher-end wines in the range. There’s tons of immediacy here." ~92 Vinous Media
